  1. Warm-up • Seating chart at front. We’re using the same chart I made last time, but this time we’re actually staying in our seats! • Draw the Dot Diagrams for the following: • NH3 • H2S • KBr

  2. Prove to me you know this… • Determine if the bond will be covalent or ionic and then draw the dot diagram for the compound. Remember, if it’s ionic you must draw the transfer of electrons and include the charges. If it’s covalent, make sure to draw circles around the shared electrons. • 2 Hydrogen + 1 Selenium • 3 Lithium + 1 Nitrogen • Oxygen and Oxygen

  3. Chemistry Unit Four, Day Three Kimrey 3 October 2012

  4. VSEPR • Stands for “Valence shell Electron pair Repulsion” • V-Valence • S-Shell • E-Electron • P-Pair • R-Repulsion

  5. REPULSION BETWEEN VALENCE ELECTRONS CAUSES ELECTRON PAIRS TO SPREAD AS FAR APART AS POSSIBLE. • UNSHARED PAIRS OCCUPY MORE SPACE THAN SHARED PAIRS. • THEORY GIVES SHAPE

  6. Why do we get different shapes? • Helps us to predict the shape that a compound will be • Electron pairs will spread as far apart as possible. • Basically Electrons don’t like each other very much!

  7. 5 Shapes • Tetrahedral- four single bonds • Trigonal Pyramidal- 3 single bonds and 1 lone pair • Trigonal planar – 2 single, 1 double • Bent- 2 bonds (any type) and lone pairs • Linear- 2 bonds no lone pairs or just 2 atoms ** Bonds and lone pairs off of the central atom!!

  8. Tetrahedral • Four bonding pairs and zero lone pairs

  9. Trigonal Pyramidal • Three single bonds and one lone pair of electrons.

  10. Trigonal Planar • Three bonds and no lone pairs

  11. Bent • Two bonds and lone pairs

  12. Linear • One or two bonding pairs and no lone pairs

  13. PracticeDraw the Lewis structure and predict the shape • CF4 • Tetrahedral • PH3 • Trigonal Pyramidal • SO3 • Trigonal Planar • H2O • Bent

  14. Predict the shape of the following • PF3 • TrigonalPyrimidal • SeO3 • Trigonal Planar • CBr4 • Tetrahedral • SF2 • Bent • SiO2 • Linear

  15. Review • What does VSEPR stand for? • List the five different shapes of molecules. • Predict the shape of the following: • H2S • O3 • CCl4
