Designators Open to NROTC • NROTC midshipmen are commissioned into the Unrestricted Line (URL) Community • URL Designators • 1160 Surface Warfare • 1160N Surface Warfare—Nuclear Option • 1170 Submarine • 1180 Special Warfare (SEALs) • 1190 Special Operations (Small Boats, EOD) • 1370 Naval Flight Officer (NFO) • 1390 Pilot

  10. Obligation • Scholarship • At least 4 years active duty following commissioning • College Program • 3 years following commissioning • Nuclear (Subs and surface) • 5 years following commissioning • Aviation • Pilot: 8 years following wings • NFO: 6 years following wings

  11. Aviation • ASTB Exam • Required for Pilots and NFOs. Must have passing score to be assigned designator. IF YOU PLAN TO PUT PILOT OR NFO W/IN TOP 2 CHOICES, YOU MUST TAKE ASTB. • Limited to 3 tests. Second test may be taken on the 31st day after the first test. Must wait 180 days between second and third tests. • THE MOST RECENT SCORE WILL BE USED, NOT THE HIGHEST SCORE. • Minimum scores: Pilot: 4 / 5 , NFO: 4 / 5 • GPA requirement (NFO and Pilot) • 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. • Waivers may be requested, but should not be counted on. • Medical • PRK – Talk to advisor and Mr Foti 1st!!!. • Flight physical timeline • FY11 Service Assignment average Pilots AQT 6.8 / PFAR 7.2 NFOs AQT 6.4 / FOFAR 6.8

Nuclear Power • DO NOT HAVE TO BE A TECHNICAL MAJOR TO BE ACCEPTED TO NUCLEAR POWER! • Start discussing application packages during your Junior year. • Grades in technical classes count! • Records will be screened, interviews will take place in Washington DC (NAVSEA 08) in the Fall (or Spring) of Senior year. Junior year possible as well. • Immediate notification after interview

  13. Special Warfare/Special Operations • Mini-BUD/S no longer offered. We can arrange for exposure to Special Warfare units for interested midshipmen. Talk to your advisor early in junior year. • Special pre-requisites include: • Dive Physical • Special Physical Fitness Test • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that the student obtain an interview from a qualified Special Warfare/Special Operations Officer. • Must be first choice (EOD will accept 2nd choice if SEALS are first choice) • Applications due prior to regular service assignment packages (about 2 weeks)

  14. Physicals • For SWO. Initial qualification physicals are good for 5 years. Some tests must be updated prior to commissioning (dental, HIV, PAP, etc) • Additional physical requirements • Aviation physical (Pilot or NFO) • Nuclear Power physical • Dive physical • Aviation and sub physicals should be conducted prior to service assignment, but only need final approval prior to commissioning

  15. “Rules” for Designator Choices • 5 URL / 1 Restricted Line • 1st 5 must include Nuc, SWO, Pilot or NFO • Only 1 SWO “type” in top 3 • Which is good to go? • 1170 / 1160 / 1390 / 1370 / 1180 / 1640 • 1160 / 1390 / 1160L / 1370 / 1170 / 1650 • 1390 / 1370 / 1160 / 1160E / 1170 / 1190

Selection Procedure and Timeline • June: All Service Assignment information must be entered into OPMIS • Major • Date of Commission • Board Points • Naval Science Year • Home of Record • Degree program (major) • Five URL designator choices/1 RL choice ** • Cumulative GPA • Aptitude Score • ASTB Scores (if applicable)

Procedure and Timeline (continued) • Summer 09: NROTC Unit runs verification reports from OPMIS • No data can be changed at this point • Midshipmen review Verification Reports • August / September: Hard copy packages due to NSTC • NOTE: Limited packages also due for nurses, and are used in determining priority for duty stations • October: NSTC conducts board. Target date for results is mid November.

Step 1: Order of Merit • Non-Aviation Score (All) • Cumulative GPA (4.0 Scale) – 45% • Aptitude – 35% • Only Spring Semester Junior Year • Academic Major – 10% • Tier 1 = 100%, Tier 2 = 85%, Tier 3 = 75% • PNS Points – 10% • Aviation Score (1370/1390) – Anyone with a ASTB score gets one. Used to determine Top 25% for Pilot/NFO 1st Choice folks • Non-Aviation Score – 60% • AQR – 15% • PFAR/FOFAR – 25%

  19. Step 2: Get ‘er done • Rack and Stack and start picking. • Top 25% in each designator “You are safe” • Cherry Picking?? Yes! • Quality Spread??? Somewhat, but not the rule. • “TBD’s” • Subjective vs Objective

Medical School • Take the MCAT by May of Junior year. • Submit applications to NSTC by 1 July of Junior year. • No more than 25 NROTC midshipmen selected/year. • Minimum GPA of 3.5, solid grades in technical courses. • If selected, student must apply to an accredited medical school between August and November of the calendar year prior to starting medical school. • If not selected to medical school by May of Senior year, the student must accept a warfare designator and reapply to medical school upon completion of their initial obligation.

  21. Miscellaneous • Leave of Absence (LOA) for Graduate Study • Applications are due concurrent with service assignment • Selected midshipmen will be designated and will be commissioned into that designator at the end of the period of study. • Some options within communities for Immediate Graduate Education (IGEP)

Helpful Hints • Keep your options open • Get good grades • Take ASTB early (and again, if necessary) • Get the right physical • Ensure accurate records (OPMIS) • Learn all you can on cruise • Decide by the middle of your 2nd semester of your junior year • Don’t game it!!!!!! • Epiphany: Call your Daddy!
