In addition, community events, lectures, and films held primarily at the public library were also included.

  9. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • Quotes…. • “As I reflect back on these experiences, I am satisfied. I learned how to deal with many different kinds of people from many different walks of life. I also met many different people throughout this experience… I really wouldn’t mind doing my hours again. I thought it was really fun and interesting and I was glad to be helping out a good cause… I learned a lot about the different kinds of people and how they live. I also got to get to know the town and the people of Madison a little better.”

  10. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • “I enjoyed my time helping out at the Habitat for Humanity office; it was nice that I was able to do something for her that I know something about… I guess from this experience I learned that anyone can help out and it’s really not that bad and can be kind (of) enjoyable, you can meet new people and learn about them… I also learned that Habitat for Humanity actually gives out loans and such, and really is into a lot more th(a)n I originally (thought). I guess I also thought of them just as the group that builds homes… All in all I think this was a good activity for people and (it) really gets students out there meeting new people and even doing something related with their major if they want. I think it helps to get people to look beyond themselves and see who else is out there and may be in need of help. It also helps students get involved in the community and give some (of) the events around campus a chance, and get them to be more active in their college experience.”

  11. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • “After hearing the presentation on helping the elderly with using computers, I immediately thought back to the conversations I had with the residents about using computers... I learned the value of understanding the obstacles faced by the elderly population when learning a new form of technology… If given the chance, I will definitely want to do this type of volunteerism again… The volunteering requirement as part of this class motivated me to go out and volunteer… I think that these types of experiences are (an) important part of the college learning experience. I think that more professors should make volunteering a part of their curriculum…”

  12. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • “From meeting with my ESL conversation partner I learned that people from all over the world have something to offer for the benefit of mankind. I also learned that there are no samurai or ninjas in Japan… I learned that the ESL organization helps a lot of foreign students cope with living outside of their native countries. They help by translating homework and by teaching the basics of the English language to the foreign students. I thought that my service learning experience was valuable.”

  13. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • “In all honesty I didn’t feel that I would have any fun performing these hours of service at all. I had so much fun and yes I would do something like this again… I have not done anything that I found to be this fun for community work in my life, but I haven’t really volunteered for any of that either. I would have to say that in performing these hours I have been inspired to try to participate in more volunteer work.”

  14. 2. My Experiences with SL in the Classroom • “I probably would not voluntarily do these things again because I did not enjoy the majority of the things I did. The Drug and Alcohol Forum was interesting and I would not mind learning more about that. I was kind of uncomfortable putting informational cards on people’s doors because I was afraid someone would see us and be angry that we were putting things on their doors. Although it can be done, it is difficult for college students to work in extra things to do along with the homework that we already have so I do not care for the idea of doing community service hours for a grade. I do not think that the particular things that I did for service learning were too valuable to my college experience. However, I may have had a better experience if I had not tried to cram so much of my service learning into a short period of time, which was my own fault. Others probably got more out of it.”
