Innovative Chimney Cleaning Solutions: Effective Design & Prototyping in Creosote Removal
On April 26, 2011, Team Clean, comprising William Land, Matthew Vida, Keith Martin, and Robert Edling, tackled the chimney creosote build-up issue, caused by condensation, wood particles, and water vapor. Their design criteria focused on creating an inexpensive, universal, and durable chimney cleaning solution with one-time installation, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal. With a successful proof of concept via testing, the team identified both successes and challenges, including cable unraveling. Future recommendations and a cost analysis will guide improvements in prototype production.

Jason Gabler’s Prototype, From this to This
Sponsor Specifications • Inexpensive • Universal • Easy to: • Use • Manufacture • Install • Safe & Effective
The Concept, effective and easy. Criteria for Design: • One time installation • Corrosion resistant • Universal design for square, rectangular, and round chimneys • Low cost • Aesthetically pleasing and permanent mount • Durable and universal brush
Cable Drum (Old): 3D Solid Model • Easy to install • Powered by user • Unobtrusive
System Testing: Successes and Complications Cable unraveled on drum during testing due to loss of tension
Looking Back: Recommendations & Conclusions In conclusion, our design met all of the engineering specifications outlined in the beginning of the project. Proof of concept was established through testing. Possible design improvements are outlined below.
