  1. MMS15 Interactive Knowledge Base on NDE of Composites SUMMARY Presentation

  2. Industry Perception Perception of NDE does not often tally with reality • Its too novel • I don’t have a procedure • Its not applicable in my sector • It’s a research tool • Its too expensive I’ll stick with what I know……...

  3. Industry Need for the IKB... “This will enable the knowledge and experience that is currently spread around a number of industry sectors to be consolidated in a form that is useful to Airbus UK” “The thing I need most is a single-point of focus for information on NDE. I know the information is there, but I cannot find it. - Ford UK CPD4D” “If I use composites….how will I inspect them” “We spend thousands in developing new NDE procedures….. I suspect that they may already exist” "The outcome of this project would be useful ... to assess the quality of our products….. in helping to prove to our customers that the product was built to an acceptable standard- Vosper Thorneycroft “ The knowledge is there but industry cannot find it….

  4. What questions will the IKB answer • Is the equipment portable and usable in the field? • What size of defect will it find? • Is it applicable to my application? • Are there procedures and standards I can use? • What does the data look like and show me? • Will it work in my composite fabrication? • Can it size and characterise the defect? • What is the status of the method? • What are the limitations? • How do I use the data in defect assessment or design? • Who else in my sector is using the method? ... ...An authoritative answer…..all in one place….

  5. What will MMS15 deliver? A step change in the use of NDE by UK industry. A gain in the quality of composite components. • A single focal point for industry on NDE of composites…the IKB ….on your desk • Transfer of NDE expertise across industry • An NDE forum for exchange of practical and new information (Technology transfer) • A live IKB that will evolve and grow with time • Inclusive of all industry sectors and NDE methods. Focused where it matters

  6. MMS15 - Project Team • Team • 30+ years relevant experience • across all industries and full diversity of NDE • includes the two main centres of composite NDE : AEA Technology National NDT Centre (NNDTC), Qinetiq • pre-eminent centre on inspection performance and reliability (NNDTC) • NetComposites portal gives effective dissemination • Several years experience running IKBs for industry • Value for Money • concentrate on delivering data, knowledge and guidance • Substantive knowledge committed to programme

  7. Essential input to the IKB Knowledge on Inspection performance is crucial to the application of NDE and essential in the IKB • Performance • Sensitivity • Speed • coverage • reliability (Probability of detection (POD), false calls, human reliability) • Capability • Theoretical sensitivity • Expert judgement • Key where information is limited • Other factors • coatings, materials, defect type, fabrication method, geometry environment etc. ….this is a key team strength

  8. MMS15 Distinctive Features • Inclusive ….expertise is across industry and covers full diversity of NDE • Quantitative NDE performance data ... Probability of detection (POD) data and models included • Economic and cost-benefit models Inspection Value included… vital to industry • A recommend-a-technique capability based on the best of expert judgement • State-of-the-art user-interface and effective dissemination via NetComposites portal

  9. MMS 15 - Outputs • Relevant • Knowledge and guidance… more than just data • taking the data further, answering the ‘how to …’ questions • Accessible • available from the user’s desk…. anywhere… anytime • up-to-date….changes available in real time • presented in the right language • Value • making best use of today’s information, augmenting in key areas, extracting the maximum benefit • IKB….we have used the concept before • ...can concentrate on delivering knowledge and guidance on composites NDE not on software

  10. MMS15 - Dissemination • Main dissemination route is via the NetComposites portal • 400 unique visitors per day • -regularly consulted by 7000 companies • respected source • Other • Significant initial publicity • direct interactions with industry • presentation and demonstration to industry (workshops) • the Industrial Advisory Group (IAG)

  11. MMS15 - Industry Interest and Project Value at 1 Dec 2001 Project Value • Participation will give industry access to Project work valued at close to £250,000 • Leveraged toover £400,000 if the value of in-kind and other Industrial Contributions are included Industry interest at proposal stage • Vosper Thorneycroft (UK) Limited • Airbus • Advanced NDT Instruments • Lot Oriel Group • Composites Repair Group • Amerada Hess Limited • BG Hydrocarbon Resources Ltd • BP British Petroleum • Clockspring Limited • DML Devonport Marine Limited • IMG International Materials Group • Shell Expro • Walker Technical Resources
