CERN introduces the LECS (Electronics Common Services) initiative to offer an improved rental scheme and electronics purchasing options for its staff. As per a memo from R. Cashmore, a new policy was established to streamline access to electronics, including a pool rental service with a 10% average fee. All new electronics above 500 CHF can be procured through this initiative, which began in early 2001. LECS aims to enhance service delivery, user engagement, and collaboration with manufacturers while ensuring staff needs are met effectively.

LECS • LECS: LHC Electronics Common Services • New Service: Offered as well as Pool renting At now, it is either or • Defined by a memo from R.Cashmore Advisory Committee for Electronics Support (EAB predecessor) LECS C.Moine
LECS New Electronics Pool Policy http://cern.web.cern.ch/CERN/Divisions/EP/ACES/ Memo from R.Cashmore (22.02.2000) • Renting scheme • Pool rental (10% average fee) still exists • LECS • CERN staff purchase all new electronics via the Pool • Would start at the end of LEP • Full purchase price is paid, along with 5 % yearly fee. • To be reviewed after 2 years of operation LECS C.Moine
LECS implementation • Started beginning of 2001 (end of LEP) • Not all hardware will be handled by ESS • defined all hardware above 500 CHF in memo • Discussions with experiments • Try to make attractive for users • ESS added value • Contact with manufacturers • spares • expertise in operating modules or software LECS C.Moine
LECS implementation • Service started • Started with hardware not in pool • make case study • so as not to be confused with rental scheme • Audit of ordered material • With the help of SPL • See where we can help • Material to be used from end of LEP to beginning of LHC to be reviewed LECS C.Moine
LECS: Which product and How • Discussions with designers Understand the product and evaluate ESS added-value • Building test benches • Understand users’ needs: • TTC workshop • Input from LECC • Discussions with users. Exchange of mails • ESS Web page: http://ess.web.cern.ch/ESS/ • LECS supported products TTC - ELMB - Intel Processors LECS C.Moine
LECS: getting products • Getting modules from designers (TTCvx) Test on our test bench • Manufacturing by CERN (TTCrm) • Getting components • Soldering (workshop or Firstec) • Test on our test bench • Re-engineering ELMB printed circuit board • Market survey and Price Inquiry TTCvi, TTCbi, ELMB • Company follow-up during building LECS C.Moine
LECS infrastructure • Labels • Distinguishable from Pool labels • Data base • For logistics • Automatic monthly billing (5% per year) • Distribution Done by myself up to now because of : • lack of products • necessary discussions with users • integration with the pool LECS C.Moine
LECS future It’s up and running : your wishes are welcome LECS C.Moine
