3. Revenge by Alexis Zapalka Explanation The poem Revenge by Alexis Zapalka is similar to the short story The Cast of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. I chose this poem because I can relate that the narrator, Montressor is trying to take revenge on his friend, Fortunato because Fortunato insulted him. He decided to murder his friend during the day of the carnival. Montressor later kills Fortunato by chaining him. Like the short story, the narrator of the poem also describes his plan for revenge. He explained why he wants to take revenge.

5. Sweet Revenge by Donna Tucker Explanation I have found similarities betweenthe painting, Sweet Revenge by Donna Tucker to the short story, The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. In this painting, there are two dogs fighting over the NFL star quarterback, Michael Vick’s jersey who used to play for the Atlanta Falcons and now is currently playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2007, Vick participated in dog fights and was arrested and convicted for cruelty to animals. This painting shows that these two dogs are taking revenge on Michael Vick by tearing his jersey up. Similarly, the narrator, Montressor is trying to take revenge on his friend, Fortunato because Fortunato insulted him. Later in the short story, Montressor kills Fortunato the day the carnival.

11. We’re Hunting Humans by Misfits Explanation The short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is similar to the lyrics, We’re Hunting Humans by Misfits. In the short story, a general named Zaroff stated to a friend named Rainsford that he found something else to hunt; the ones that have courage, cunning and reason. Rainsford was scared and he knew that he was going to hunt humans. So, he decides to run away into the forest. Later, he makes a trap that is meant to kill Zaroffbut it severely injures him. This made him to declare that he was going to kill Rainsford. Similarly in the lyrics, the narrator and his group have expressedpassion in hunting another human being.

In the short story, a mannamed Rainsfordhas placed a deadly trap for general Zaroff that injures the general. As a result Zaroff declared that he is going to kill Rainsford and stared chasing him. The picture shows a man is running and he is being chased by another man similar to the chase in the story.

15. Family Tradition by Senses Fail Explanation The short story, The Lottery By Shirley Jackson is similar to the lyrics Family Tradition by Senses Fail. The theme, tradition played a big role in the short story. A lottery is held each year in a village which brought the entire community together. The tradition of the lottery brought the neighbors and friends together, bonding them with a common interest and purpose. Mr. Adams, one of the townsmen, stated that the northern village was talking about giving up the lottery. Old Man Warner, one of the oldest townsmen, called those northern villagers a “pack of crazy fools”. Also, he stated that there has been a lottery continuously and giving up the lottery will give them trouble. Shirley Jackson took the tradition and changed it in many different ways and showed how the village is lived off of the mysterious tradition of the lottery. Similarly, in the lyrics, Senses Fail showed how the narrator and his father enjoyed their typical family traditions.

In the painting, the shabby black box represents the tradition of the lottery. The black box is nearly breaking apart, barely even black anymore after many years of use and storage, but the villagers are not willing to replace it. The lottery is contained with same remnants from the past that have evidently been passed down from earlier days, such as the creation of family lists. However, other lottery traditions have been changed or forgotten. The villagers use slips of paper instead of wood chips, for example.

19. Stalking by Funeral Dress Explanation The short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates is similar to the lyrics, Stalking by Funeral Dress. In the short story, a man named Arnold Friend meets a girl named Connie andstarts to stalk her. He forces her to go on a ride with him. Connie becomes scared and tries to call the police but failed. Arnold states before she reaches the phone that if she calls the police something bad will happen to her family. Oates did not state what happened to her in the end, but reader can imagine. Similarly in the lyrics, a person was stalking another person by going to his house, phoning him, following him, etc. The person was getting irritated and calls him sick and tries to pretend that he is not at home by pulling down the shades and locking the door.

In the short story, a man named Arnold Friend meets a girl named Connie who starts to stalk her. He was forcing her to go on a ride with him. Connie becomes scared and tries to call the police. Arnold states before she reaches the phone that if she calls the police something bad will happen to her family. She starts to scream for her mother on the phone. Oates did not state what happened to her mother. Judith Redman’s painting Stalker shows faces of two women and behind them in a distance we can see a person looking at them.

23. The Hardest Part of Work by Evan James GriffinExplanation The short story, The Orientation by Daniel Orozco is similar to the poem, The Hardest Part of Work by Evan James Griffin. In the short story, Orozco describes the office to a new employee. He shows who is in what cubicle, and explains regular tedious works in office. Similarly, the poem is describing a usual daily life of a person working in an office. Griffin describes that the person is having hard time working because he has many different tabs such as email, YouTube, EBay, Amazon and Facebook. Similar to Daniel Orozco, Evan Griffin also used humor to describe work of people in the office.
