Next Generation Search Engines Bin Tan
Current search engines only provide search service. • A lot of information about user’s interests and ad-hoc needs is known when the user searches the web.
The next generation search engine should play the role of a personal information agent that serves as an integrated web information portal customized for that person. • Search, news, articles, products, mails…
Desired Scenarios (1) • The user views a lot of web pages on Computer Science research and/or submits a lot of such queries. The search engine would favor those search results on CS research instead of general discussions of computer technology.
Desired Scenarios (2) • A user views a lot of web pages written in Chinese and/or in the UIUC domain. The search engine would recommend news on China and U-C in the integrated news reader.
Desired Scenarios (3) • A user views some web pages on laptops. The search engine would recommend some hot laptops deals to the user when they appear.
Desired Scenarios (4) • A user keeps in her bookmark a friend’s blog/homepage. The search engine would inform the user when there is a new article in that blog / when the homepage changes a lot.
Possible Approach • Search engines tied to browsers • User interests modeling • Recommender systems
