  3. What is the ICRM & CRM? The Institute of Certified Records Managers™ (ICRM) is an international certifying organization of and for professional records and information managers. The ICRM was incorporated in 1975 to create a standard designation or CRM by which persons involved in records and information management could be measured, accredited, and recognized in accord with criteria of experience and knowledge established by their peers. ~ www.icrm.org

Determining Ability to Qualify • Relevant Professional Experience in 3 or more of the following: • Management of a Records Management Program • Records Creation and Use • Active Records Systems • Inactive Records Systems • Records Appraisal, Retention and Disposition • Records Protection • Records and Information Management Technology • Records Management Training, Education, and Awareness

  9. Determining Ability to Qualify • Experience must be supervisory / managerial in nature • Conduct program • Plan for and Implement system • Develop schedules • Manage budget • Developed and taught curriculum

  10. Applying • Need the appropriate form • Paper based (ICRM form 1) • $100 fee • Backing documentation • Letter • Explanation of positions & relevancy to areas • Position descriptions • Letters of affirmation from former employers • Copies of transcripts

The Exams • 6 Parts • Part 1 Management Principles and the Records and Information Management Program • Part 2 Records Creation and Use • Part 3 Records Systems, Storage and Retrieval • Part 4 Records Appraisal, Retention, Protection and Disposition • Part 5 Technology, Equipment and Supplies • Part 6 Case Studies

  12. The Exams • Studying • ICRM Bibliography • ARMA Bookstore • Amazon & Chapters! • Don’t rely on RIM Texts alone! • Use the Guides provided by the ICRM • Mentors – some local! 

The Exams • Parts 1-5 each consist of 100 multiple choice • Must do 1-5 before 6 (not during same cycle) • Retake as often as you like in a 5 year period • 80 minutes per part • Electronic • 70% to pass • Part 6 consists of 2 case studies • 60 point & 40 points (60 first then choose a 40 point) • 4 hours to complete (no spell check & limited formatting)

  14. The Exams • Offered in February, May, August & November • 1-5 are offered 5 consecutive days • 6 is only on Thursday • You choose times convenient for you (based on an offered schedule) • If you fail Part 6 by less than 8 points (63-69%), you can appeal within 15 days

  15. The Exams • $100 per exam, Parts 1-5 • $150 for Part 6 • CRM Outline (for categories) • Preparing for the CRM Handbook (outline and practice exams) • Best Tip – think logically!

Maintaining Your Designation • 100 Contact Hours required within a 5 year period • “a clock hour of active involvement in a qualifying educational activity” • Begins January 1st or July 1st • Must apply within 6 months of activity • Hours during last year of cycle which exceed the 100 can be carried over (no more than 50)
