  1. Leadership 1 By the end of this lesson you should be able to identify and compare qualities we associate with leadership. To do this you will: To consider the qualities necessary for good leadership To identify them in people we see in the media Compare them with the needs of the Jewish people at the time of Jesus

  2. Look at the pictures of the following people…. • Which of them are good leaders? • Which of them are ‘bad’ leaders? • What qualities can you identify that make you think that?

  3. Look at the pictures of the following people…. Which of them are good leaders? Which of them are ‘bad’ leaders? What qualities can you identify that make you think that? Extension: Which is the best leader of them all and why?

  4. Task 1: Create a leader • Use your discussions to create a job advert for a ‘leader’ • You decide what they will be the leader of • Write a description of the kind of person who should apply for the job.

  5. Who fits the bill? Assessment for Learning AFL • Feed back your leader descriptions to the class • Can you think of anyone who may fit the bill? They could be famous or just someone you know.

The Jewish people were looking/ waiting for a leader Think pair share about their history: • a) What can you remember about the trials of the Jewish people? • b) Why were they in such need of a leader? • c) What sort of person were they looking for? • EXT: compare these answers to the qualities we assign to ‘leaders’ today Comparison and evaluation  Level 7 Assessment for Learning AFL – record your answers in full sentences using what we have shared to help you

Write a definition in your book

  9. The Messiah Starter Activity Self Assessment SA Assessment for Learning AFL Task: Using your dictionary and a green pen, correct your definition of the word messiah

  10. The Messiah Jewish Understanding Task: • Read Daniel 7: 9-14 and 2 Samuel 7: 12-15 • Using this information and what you already know about the Messiah, complete a spider diagram Jewish Ideas about the Messiah

The Messiah Jewish Understanding Self Assessment SA a warrior king a judge a just and powerful ruler Jewish Ideas about the Messiah bringer of peace anointed by God a royal person he will restore the Kingdom of Israel Task: Using these characteristics and any evidence from the bible work you have done, explain why the Jews did not think Jesus was the Messiah. L4 – Show what the Jews expected and say Jesus was not these qualities L5 – Explain the differences between the expectations and Jesus’ character L6 – Compare using biblical evidence for Jewish views and New Testament evidence for Jesus

  12. Are the Jews right? • Discuss whether you think the Jews had a point or not? HW – Prepare a 2 minute speech/presentation that identifies Jesus as a leader/Messiah You will need to include: What the Jews expected from their Messiah Why they didn’t think that this was Jesus Why we as Christians think that he was! This will form the assessment for this topic! It will be delivered two weeks from now.

Read these passagesMatch them up with which quality they show jesus displaying Self Assessment SA • Matthew 1:1-16 • John 8:2-11 • Luke 1:26-34 • Mark 11: 15-19 • Matthew 26: 52-53 • Royal – He is a descendent of David who was a King • Judge – even though he doesn’t judge the woman, he judges those who were about to stone her • Warrior – he fights for what is right, justice • Anointed by God – Mary is told she will carry God’s Son • Ruler – she is told he will rule over the house of Jacob • Restorer of the kingdom – the temple should be for all people, just like the kingdom of God, for ‘all nations’ • Bringer of Peace – he responds peacefully even though they are fighting with him

Jesus is the Messiah • Exam skills – • Explain why Christians think Jesus is the Messiah (8 marks) • Pick four of the qualities that are associated with the Messiah • For each one, explain how Jesus meets this quality • Use direct evidence from the bible and explain how it displays the particular quality • 4 points, PEEL in each, 2 marks each point

Why do you think Jesus didn’t want people to know that he was the Messiah? • Jesus would not want people to know he was the messiah because: • Not treat him right • Ask him for special favours • Expect wrong things from him • People wouldn’t understand Self Assessment SA

DUH! • Read the following passages: • Mark 10:35-45 - The Best Seats • Mark 9:33-37 – Who’s the greatest? • Matthew 16:21-26 – Peter doesn’t understand • Acts 1:6 – After the Resurrection • For each passage, answer these questions: • What is the misunderstanding? • How does Jesus help them to understand? • What is Jesus’ message about himself?

Bring it all together Self Assessment SA • Compare and contrast ideas that people have about Jesus being the Messiah • Level 4 – State what qualities people expected the Messiah to have • Level 5 – Explain, using some evidence how Jesus could be seen as the Messiah • Level 6 – Compare the Jewish and Christian understanding of the Messiah stating how Jesus doesn’t obviously meet the Jewish expectations • Level 7 – Evaluate how even though Jesus’ Messiahship was not easily identified by the Jews, he does meet the criteria in different ways.
