  2. Lt. Gen. Mary Legere is a career military officer who rose to become one of the most influential women in the history of U.S. defense intelligence. A 1982 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, she received her commission in the Army through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and served for 34 years, serving in a progression of leadership and intelligence position in multiple theaters, including Iraq, Korea and Bosnia until her promotion to Lieutenant General and her nomination as the Army’s Senior Intelligence Officer in April 2012.

  3. From 2012 to March 2016, she served as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Army and Army Chief of Staff for all aspects of Intelligence, holding the position longer than any other leader in the Army Intelligence Corps history.

  4. As the Army’s Senior Intelligence Advisor, Legere was the Army’s senior representative to the United States Intelligence Community, responsible for working with the Army Intelligence Corps to orchestrate multi-discipline intelligence support for critical operations impacting national security.

  5. “The role of the United States intelligence community has never been more important, Legere stated recently, “particularly as the level of instability and uncertainty in the global security environment and threats to our national security have increased so steadily.”

  6. “The challenges today of protecting the country and our friends and allies from attack or other dangers have never been greater, and require a total team effort by everyone in the Intelligence Community and national security sectors, to ensure the security of our citizens, economy, environment and infrastructure.”

  7. One of the principle concepts of national security is power, which may be best defined as the nation being in control of its own sovereignty and destiny. The nation’s instruments of power include the armed forces, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and those governmental agencies that are dedicated to public diplomacy, foreign aid, and financial controls.

  8. Lt. Gen. Mary Legere is one of just nineteen female general officers in the Army. She has served as the senior U.S. Intelligence Officer for U.S. Forces Korea and for Mult-National Force-Iraq, and has participated in Operation Joint Forge and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
