  1. Do Now: Looking at the picture, what factors do you think cause the land to move suddenly or fall apart on the surface of the Earth (cause a mass movement). AIM: What is Mass Movement?

  2. Mass Movement-the transfer of rock and soil down slope due to gravity *Mass Movements shape the landscapes on Earth

  3. Triggers (causes) of Mass Movement A) Water • Makes the soil/rock loose (over saturated)

  4. B) Oversteepend slopes • Material falls off steep slopes (people make the land too steep) C) Earth Quakes • dislodges or move large amounts of rock

  5. D) Removal of Vegetation • roots hold together the soil.

  6. II. Types of Mass Movement Classified by their speed and type of material that is moving A. Rockfalls • rock fragments move through the air Rock fall car B) Slides • movement of rock/material in contact with the surface. Japan landslide Landslides

  7. C) Slumps • slow downward movement of material causing a curved appearance.

  8. D) Mudflow • Move quickly • Soils mixed with water moves down hill E) Earthflows • Move slowly • Entire areas of land move down hill when oversaturated

  9. III. Preventing Mass Movement What do people do to prevent damage from mass movements? • construct fences • build walls • put up signs Rock fall fence(high energy)

  10. Closure 1: - Take a “Types of Mass Movement” worksheet from the back top bin. You have 10 minutes to complete both sides and then we will go over the worksheet.

  11. Closure 2: - Get your review books and work on pages 212-213 # 1-4 Answers: 1. 2. 3. 4. 3 4 1 1
