  1. PRINCE Community Solar Cookers for Schools and Hospitals. Prof. Ajay Chandak Certified Energy Auditor & Renewable Energy Consultant S.S.V.P.S. BSD College of Engineering, Dhule: 424005, INDIA

  2. Facts about SK-14 and Small Schefflers SK-14 Suitable for family Some manufacturers project SK-14 or Scheffler Concentrators of 2.7 sqm aperture area as community solar cookers, these are not. Both of these are primarily domestic cookers.

  3. Limitations of 16 sqm Scheffler Concentrators for rural Schools • High capital investment: 16 sqm unit costs min Rs. 200000 i.e. US $ 4000 • Skill level for operation is not available at rural schools. • System needs permanent installation and shadow free area throughout the year. • For above reasons, Scheffler concentrators are recommended to rural schools with caution. • Can cook for around 150 students.

  4. Salient features: • Available in DIY kit. (Do It Yourself kit). Can be assemble easily with the reference of manual. • Reflector is supported by strong fabricated structure and hence dish shape is protected against strong wind, stone or ball hits etc. • Very compact packing. Can be transported even on head load. • Tested at RTC. Approved product by Govt. of India. • 4 sqm aperture area. • Patent pending. • 7. Manual tracking, easy to operate. • 8. Maintenance free system PRINCE-40 Concentrator 9. Can cook for 50 student’s mid day meal in one hour

  5. CRS / MPSSS project “Feedback 1 from Fr. Joseph Porimattam, Director Samaritans addressed to Fr. Mathew of MPSSS“: Dear Father, Greetings from Samaritans! This to inform you that we have already installed PRINCE-40 solar cookers in four places viz. Asha Bhavan, Panna, St. Joseph Balabhavan, Panna, Samaritan Hospital , Satna, & Uday Balabhavan, Karimatti. As the result everywhere it is functioning very well and it is used to cook Chaval and Dhal, which reduces the use of Gas and really they benefit out of it. Taste of food is great.

  6. CRS / MPSSS project in M.P. & Chattisgarh “Feedback 2 from Fr. Sebi Thottankara, to Fr. Mathew of MPSSS“: 16 nos. PRINCE-40 solar cookers are installed at different schools. Rice, pourage, Dall, vegetables and boiling eggs are cooked within 50 to 65 minutes at present. The hostel management and cooks are happy because it not only save time and money but also protect eyes from smoke and fire to persons who are in the kitchen. Along with the cooking in the solar cooker, cooks are able do other kitchen work. Once again we are grateful CRS and MPSSS for your kind support. “Feedback 3 from Fr. Praful Kujur to Fr. Mathew of MPSSS“:PRINCE-40 solar cookers are installed at 16 different schools catering to 907 students. Mr. Oscar Xalxo GVK the administrator visited most of the centers and took feedback about its functioning. All the Solar Cookers are functioning well and the center in-charges are happy to have this set. In the beginning they had little problem only because they were not setting according to the sun ray. Now they are happy to receive it and saving lots of fire wood, also the extra expenditure has been reduced.

  7. CRS / MPSSS project in M.P. & Chattisgarh • Salient features of the project: Total 42 units were installed. • First project of this nature in central India, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh region serving around 2500 children. • Project executed only after demonstration of technology and approval of the same by the cooks. Initially 2 units were installed for demonstration and further 40 units were added. • All units were installed by local people of MPSSS, women also participated in fixing the solar cooker. • Users reported many aspects apart from fuel saving like ‘Freedom from smoke’, ‘Great Taste’, ‘Extra time available for other work’ etc.

  8. WOTR, Watershed Organisation TRust project in Maharashtra • Salient features of the project: • Total 23 units were installed. • Need based project, executed in Sangamner and Akole tahesils area of Maharashtra. • Project for Mid-Day-Meal scheme for schools. • Serving approx. 1500 children. • Pilot project, likely to be expanded to many schools. Detailed project report is available at: http://ecologic.wotr.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Solar-Parabolics-A-Report-by-WOTR-Feb-2012.pdf

  9. WOTR, Watershed Organisation TRust project in Maharashtra Detailed project report is available at: http://ecologic.wotr.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Solar-Parabolics-A-Report-by-WOTR-Feb-2012.pdf Project report as above will help in understanding the field related issues and feedbacks from the users..

  10. PRINCE-40 in action. Watch video of PRINCE-40 in action at following link http://youtube/c_MLsJ9OlLQ and http://youtube/guoecdq9ypk Pressure cooker of 22 to 35 liter capacity is recommended. However open pot cooking is also practiced by many end users.

  11. Controlled performance tests for fuel saving for PRINCE-40 concentrators

  12. Recent Developments: PRINCE-60 S • Dish of 6 sqm suitable for 100 people. • Dish with rear window and umbrella. This will provide needed comfort to work in Sun. 3. Steps on rear side for easy access to the pot.

  13. PRINCE-60 S Can cook for 80 student’s Mid Day Meal in one hour.

  14. PRINCE concentrators for Hospitals PRINCE concentrators can be used in Hospitals for ‘Autoclaving’ of surgicals and also for treatment of ‘Biomedical waste’. Same concentrators can be used for community cooking at hospitals. Same concentrators can be used for laundry of the rural hospitals.

  15. Experimenting with PRINCE-40 Concentrators Project for extensive clinical trials of PRINCE-40 solar concentrator for ‘Autoclaving’ was carried out at Govt. Medical college Dhule in their pathology department. This project won 1st Award for medical research at state level event. Dr. Mrudula Dravid, Head pathology department for solar autoclaving project with Prof. Ajay Chandak.

  16. PRINCE-40 Concentrator: Autoclaving test

  17. PRINCE-40 Concentrator: Autoclaving test Research paper on trials of PRINCE concentrators for autoclaving applications was published in reputed international Elsevier publication, ‘Journal of Hospital Infection’.

  18. FAQs, feedbacks, solutions. • How long the reflector lasts: It depends on the type of reflectors and climate where they are deployed. In dry weather like Dhule the reflector life can be easily well over 5 years. We have few SK-14 units with more than 8 years of operation the reflectors are still going well. In coastal areas and industrialised zones the reflector life can be around 5 years. This life is only for anodised, hardened, polished aluminum, imported sheets. • How much reflector replacement will cost: At present the reflector set costs around Rs. 8600/- for PRINCE-40 and Rs. 13000 for PRINCE-60. However trend in reflector cost over last five years is downwards. Same reflectors used to cost Rs. 12000 and Rs. 18000 per set three years ago.

  19. FAQs, feedbacks, solutions. • Reflectors look dull after one month or so: Reflectors when new have plastic coat. Wax or thick oil film is used between the plastic and polished surface. When the plastic film is removed the reflector surface looks extremely glossy because of this wax coat. Over time this coat vanishes and reflectors look dull. However this should not be mistaken as loss of reflectivity. Reflectivity is still good and cooking time is a good indicator. • How to improve utilisation for cookers of Mid Day Meal scheme: Some microenterprise may be attached to the solar cookers for improving utilisation. Preparation of snacks, papads, manufacturing of candles are some possible enterprises.

  20. FAQs, feedbacks, solutions. • Pot height is high and inconvenient: Yes, simplified design has this limitations. Simple two fabricated steps can overcome the problem. Even though higher pot height is one limitation of PRINCE-40, still it is better than other equivalent circular dishes. Circular dishes of same aperture area will have at least 15% more height than PRINCE-40 • New design of PRINCE-60 has window and steps from rear side.

  21. FAQs, feedbacks, solutions. • Do you need skilled people for fixing the cooker: Not really. However it is better that somebody has seen and assemble the cooker. This is DIY (Do IT Yourself) Kit. • How much food can be cooked with PRINCE-40: PRINCE-40 cooks 5 kg of rice in one hour which is suitable for 50 students for Mid day meal scheme. Generally two hours of operation of PRINCE-40 should suffice for food for 50 people. If use can be extended to 3 or 4 hours, same cooker can feed up to 100 people. PRINCE-60 can cook for 80 children in one hour. • How much LPG PRINCE-40 can save: Savings observed in different trials is around 700 gms of LPG per hourwith PRINCE-60 saving is around 1100 gms.

  22. FAQs, feedbacks, solutions. • Do you need skilled people for operation of the cooker: Not really. A trainer needs only half an hour to teach all aspects of operation& maintenance of the cooker. • How frequently you need to track PRINCE cookers: Every 20-30 minutes. It takes less than one minute to track the cooker. • What routine maintenance is required: If reflectors go dusty or food spills on the reflector, one has to spray some shampoo water on the reflectors, especially in dirty areas, leave for five minutes and then just wash off with water. Never scratch the reflector surface.

  23. Budgetary Costs • PRINCE-40: Costs Rs. 30000/- ex. factory Dhule. • PRINCE-60 : Costs Rs. 50000/- ex. factory Dhule. • Transport and installation costs are not included. Installation expected from the technicians of end user. Training of technician at Dhule is free of cost. This technician is expected to work as trainers for other installations. • Technicians if required for installation from parent company then the costs are Rs. 2000 per person per day on Dhule to Dhule basis, plus cost of travel, stay, food and logistics. • Depending on the ordered quantity, delivery time required and time of order costs can vary by @ 10%
