  2. Sectionalism • Sectionalism:a strong loyalty to the region or section where a person lives • Where do you think the sectional rivalries were in NC?

  3. Sectionalism in NC • North vs. South • Urban vs. Rural • East vs. West Why do you think this sectionalism existed?

  4. Why did sectionalism exist? • Differences in national origin • Socioeconomic status • Geography • Economic interests • Political power

  5. What was going on with the capital? • The location of the capital divided north and south for 40 years after 1729. • The capital was located where the governor chose to live!!!! • The capital started out in Albermarle, then moved to Cape Fear, then to New Bern.

  6. What caused tension between the north and south?

  7. Granville District • Granville District- the land that one Proprietor, Earl Granville, kept whenever NC became a royal colony in 1729. • He still received 1/8 quitrent.

  8. Granville District Shadiness • The Granville District had 2/3 population and much of the wealth. • Most Granville District settlers were squatters. They took land without paying taxes.

  9. Unequal Representation • Another cause of conflict was unequal representation. • Each old Albemarle county had five representatives in the Assembly. • Each new Cape Fear county was allowed only two.

  10. WHAT THE HECK? • In 1746, governor Gabriel Johnston had the Assembly meeting at Cape Fear without the Albermarle representatives, who were detained by bad weather. • The assembly passed laws without a qurom, or majority of members present, that reduced Albemarle representation. • This caused anarchy.

  11. So…. • Albermarle counties ignored the laws until 1754 wen their rights were restored by the order of the English king. • Arthur Dobbs

  12. Tryon Palace

  13. Tryon Palace • Governor William Tryon (who later became NY governor) hired John Hawks to construct this residence at New Bern. • Why would such a nice place cause controversy?

  14. Tryon Palace • Why do you think one westerner was upset and said that “not one man in twenty…. Will ever see this famous house when built?”

  15. Tryon Palace • Money/land were scarce in the backcountry, but they still had to pay a poll tax (charged each person-rich or poor- at the same rate) collected to pay for it. • Do you agree or disagree with the westerners from the backcountry?

  16. Tryon Palace How did it unite the people of Albemarle and Cape Fear? People in both areas were afraid that the government would be relocated to the west, so they approved of construction of the palace!

  17. CANIVING • Unequal representation became a factor in the tension between the east and the west. • Representation was based on county, not by population. • So, whenever the east felt unequally represented, they created more counties, or removed counties from the Assembly

  18. Who lived where? • East: people of English descent, Highland Scots, enslaved Africans • West: Scots-Irish, Germans

  19. So… what does that have to do with anything? Socioeconomic differences East: gentry, upper class, economies built on slave labor West: small farms, free labor, social equality, did not like the English who took gained influence in NC government

  20. Edmund Fanning • Yale graduate • Enjoys books • Gold buttons • Comfortable house • Educated friends

  21. Don’t say a word outloud! • Think of someone like Edmund Fanning that you know. How does that person make you feel? Imagine they had control of your life……. How would you respond?

  22. The Regulators • Public officials received their pay from the people. • The people became angry when bribery and corruption spread. • The officials of the backcountry started dressing like Edmund Fanning.

  23. The Regulators • The people complained and took matters into their own hands and formed….. The REGULATORS!

  26. Rednap Howell • He was the Weird Al of his time! • He wrote songs that poked fun at Governor Tryon.

  27. 1768 DRAMA! • 1. Pioneers refused to pay taxes (to pay for Tryon palace) because of extortion. • 2. One Regulator’s personal property was confiscated because he refused to pay taxes. So, the Regulators hastily reacted, and shot into Edmund Fanning’s house.

  28. 1768 • 3. Fanning called the group stupid and refused to listen to their concerns and arrested two men. • 4. Citizens and Regulators stormed to the jail to protest. • 5. So, what were the fates of the people involved in this madness?

  29. 1770 • Regulators broke into the Hillsborough courthouse in _____ county, and raided the town. • They drug _____ down the steps by his heels, banging his head on every step.

  30. 1770 • The Regulators called the government _____; the government called the Regulators _____ . • What happened along the Great Alamance Creek? What was the outcome?
