Who is Botticelli?

  • Sandro Botticelli-Real name Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi

  • One of leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance

Born in Florence, Italy on March 1, 1445.

Son of Mariano di Vanno Filipepi

Botticelli means “little barrel”

Worked with artists such as Fra Filippo Lippi

Spent most of life working for great families in Florence especially Medici family

One of many artists chosen to help decorate the walls of the Sistine Chapel

The Birth of Christ - 1476-1477

  • Famous artist that introduced a new style of paintings

  • Slender, elegant figures, abstract linear patterns bathed in soft golden light

  • Painted mainly religious objects

  • Came out with first known painting in 1470- Fortitude for the Tribunale della Mercanzia (Court of Merchants)

  • 1474- St. Sebastian was hung in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore

  • Same year his father died, he made his most famous work, Birth of Venus

  • Between 1470-1482

  • Wasn’t too well known until the 19th century,

  • Tried to make paintings classical and christian

  • Botticelli served apprenticeship with Fra Filippo Lippi who taught Botticelli how to mix colors and clean paint brushes properly

  • Well known for portraying female figure

  • His peronal style of art would be described as “elegant execution, a sense of Meloncholy, and a strong emphasis on line details

  • Didn’t effect people much when he was alive

  • In later years though, people liked his work so much they started copying it

  • Mother- Was 40 years old when she had Sandro

  • Giovanni- Oldest brother. Nicknamed Botticella (keg or barrel). Sandro being the youngest is Botticelli (little barrel)

  • Second son was goldsmith. Was nicknamed Bottigello (gold beater) but later it turned into Botticelli

  • Sandro had no wife or kids

Ognissanti Church

  • Died May 17, 1510

  • Was 65 years old

  • Some say he died poor and unnaccomplished. Might have been because of some of the artists on the rise such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo Da Vinci.

  • Actual cause of death-unknown

  • Burried in the Octaccio (garden of burial ground) by the Ognissanti church
