  1. THE FLOOD DISASTER PROBLEM IN NORTHEN INDIA ( Area Delhi, Uttarkashi ) • The solution can be • SHORT TERM • LONG TERM • The long term solution is being worked out by the Government, but we can focus on Short term solution immediately • SHORT TERM Solution shall be, to transfer water from the heavy flooded areas to the draught affected areas. • This is possible by using Railways. Railway can transport much higher volume of water.

  2. The Rail wagon can carry 70,000 liter of water. On an Average 60 bogies can be connected to a goods Train. This will amount to almost 70000 x 60 = 42,00,000 lit (42 lac !) of water. Transporting water by train, will immediately solve the problem. Though this is a costly solution, it provides immediate & unique solution. It takes water from flooded areas to the adjoining draught affected area of Haryana, Punjab & Rajasthan. Trains with a average speed of 50km/hr, can transport 42 lac liter water to any place 300kms away, in just 6 hours. Another advantage is to transport water till a point from which it can flow naturally to the opposite end flooded zone. Also the train can drop water at the small villages on the rail track. For this purpose, temporary water storage which can be made in very short time with JCB type earth movers and plastic sheet undercover. The railway can pour the water at different locations & it can be transported / utilized immediately.

  3. BTPN Wagons are suitable for bulk transportation of water . They have capacity of 70000 liter.
