Complementary and Alternative MedicineCAM • Diverse medical and health care practices, systems, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. • Holistic nursing may include CAM Rx • Increased public interest and use • Some proven through research; many others being researched

  3. Complementary MedicineVersusAlternative Therapy • Complementary Medicine =Used together with conventional medicine. Ex: using massage along with traditional analgesic medications. • Alternative Therapy =Used in place of conventional medicineEx: using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing chemotherapy

  4. Integrative Medicine • Combines mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and efficacy.
