  1. Warm Up: Tone • The pleasure of jogging and running is rather like that of wearing a fur coat in Texas in August: the true joy comes in being able to take the damn thing off. And because the runner or jogger regards running and jogging as its own end, an element of puritanical fanaticism easily insinuates itself. There are people who are now begging to run up mountains. Soon, doubtless, races will be held in which the contestants will wear lead in their shoes, or carry snow tires in their arms, or strap their accountants to their backs. If it feels good to remove a fur coat in Texas in August, how much better will it feel to remove a fur coat, leather leggings, and tank helmet in Yucatan. • List 2 word to describe tone, and evidence.

  2. Warm Up: Tonal Shift • In my heart there may be doubt that I deserve the Nobel award over other men of letters whom I hold in respect and reverence – but there is no question of my pleasure and pride in having it for myself. ~John Steinbeck’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech. How does his tone shift (use words to describe his tone)? Why does he utilize a tonal shift?
