  2. RPL information kit • This is available online • And in hard copy format

  3. Candidates apply for RPL • Complete an application form • Attach a CV outlining training & assessment experience • Certified copies of qualifications • Are allocated to an assessor

  4. What happens next? • RPL assessor contacts candidate by phone • Makes an appointment to plan the assessment

  5. Initial appointment • Assessor and candidate identify the units for RPL • A planning tool is used • Specific evidence requirements are discussed

  6. Usually 3-4 weeks later Candidate brings all the evidence Assessor clarifies, asks questions and checks evidence Second appointment

  7. Assessor can sign offcandidate as competent Document the process and result Process paperwork If all is OK

  8. If not…… • Candidate may have to collect more evidence • May choose to complete an assessment task • May do gap training

  9. Our RPL uses range of methods • Portfolios Product sampling • Demonstrations Practical or written tests • Assessment panels Third party reports • Case studies Interviews • Workplace observations • Pre-prepared reports

  10. The same evidence can be used across units • This can be done via mapping • For example • TAADEL401A • TAADEL402A • TAADES402A All require lesson plans

  11. Big picture • Look at the whole job of a trainer/assessor • Deem competence vs. ticking every box • Don’t place extra hurdles

  12. Third party reports • Useful to authenticate candidates’ skills + knowledge + attitude • Use a template • Official letterhead or email address • Contact number • Person’s title and name

  13. Remember the 5 P’s! • Prior • Planning • Prevents • Piss-poor • Performance

  14. Planning RPL • Be clear up front about the process • Involve the candidate • Use a written planning tool • Line up each unit with elements outlined • Ask questions • Make suggestions

  15. Listen carefully • Questions from a candidate will indicate depth of knowledge • “What do you mean by training packages?” • Offer alternatives • Can’t locate evidence - offer assessment only pathway

  16. Communicate clearly • Allow candidates to make informed choices • Be positive about RPL • Use plain English • Have a written RPL kit/info on website • Ensure consistent message • Ask clarifying questions • Give clear feedback • Be flexible
