  • Before Confucius, government posts were given to sons of powerful people.
  • After Confucius, any man could hold a government post based on merit.
  • Merit – how qualified he was or how well he did his job.
  • Candidates for government jobs had to pass official exams – which were based on Confucius’ teachings.

  • Candidates still had to know how to read.
  • This rule made it difficult for poor men to enter the government.
  • Many talented but poor young men learned to read and were able to rise to high government positions.

  • 1. Confucius created the role of the professional teacher for adults.
  • 2. He developed not only the content of education but also its methods and ideals.
  • 3. He welcomed students from any social background, which opened the way for social mobility through education in China.

  • Confucianism became one of the major philosophies of the world, touching the fundamental beliefs and principles of a hundred generations of people.
  • Because his conversations were written down in The Analects, they were passed along from father child and from teacher to student.

  • His social philosophy paralleled the Golden Rule, and revolved around the concept of love for others.
