  2. Outcomes of the intervention 1. Integrated and sustainable human settlements in Bojanala 2. Improved socio-economic conditions of mine communities and labour sending areas 3. Improved working conditions of mine workers 4. Ensuring decent living conditions for mine workers and meaningful contribution to the development trajectory of mining towns and labour sending areas.

Objectives of the Report • To provide the committee with an update on progress made to date by the Department in Bojanala District with regard to addressing challenges in implementation of human settlements programs & projects • To report on the plans put in place by the Department with regard to informal settlements challenges • To magnify the extent of basic service issues within informal settlements

Demographic Information • Total of 1,5 million living in Bojanala Platinum DM with about 150 000 living in the informal settlements • No sense of place with an absence of any comprehensive social infrastructure with spatial fragmentation • Conditions are squalid • There is staggering unequal distribution of wealth and very poor living conditions, insufficient basic services , poverty and very poor housing conditions • District has major bulk infrastructure shortages and cannot support immediate human settlement requirements

Response on Informal Settlements in the District • In response to the informal settlements the Department in collaboration with relevant municipalities has began a process of rapid assessment and settlement planning in order to ascertain status quo of each of the informal settlements, the table below indicates a list of the number of those informal settlements where the assessment is currently underway

Informal Settlements in the Marikana Belt In march 2014, the Presidency’s office requested the Department to assist in profiling key informal settlements located in the Marikana Belt in order to respond to the then humanitarian issues including basic services; below is a list of the those informal settlements • Madibeng Freedom Park; Wonderkop& Segwaelane Marikana Nkaneng Ikemeleng Mamba Mbeki Sun; YizoYizoBoitekong Nkaneng Zakhele Popo Molefe
