  2. Introduction • There are few things in this life that compare with the satisfaction and joy that comes from having a true friend. A true friend will stick with you through adversity, a true friend will speak truth into your life, a true friend will help you grow and change, a true friend will live life with you! Whether you know it or not, you need friends, and this morning we are going to explore God’s blueprint for making and keeping friends!

Are You Chiefly Pursuing God? • The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever • John Piper’s revision of Westminster Confession • “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. Proverbs 9:10–11

  5. Are You Chiefly Pursuing God? • Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord, they would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, … But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.” Proverbs 1:29–33 • The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe. • Proverbs 29:25

Are You Chiefly Pursuing God? • Wisdom is found solely in God and to become wise you must make your life’s ambition and goal to know, love and obey God above all else Three Keys to Life • My goal in life is to please God-2 Cor. 5:9 • I please God by being like Jesus-1 Cor. 11:1 • God knows I’m not perfect but he expects me to be growing-Phil. 1:6

  7. Are You Chiefly Pursuing God? • What is your chief pursuit in life? • What would your wife and children say is your chief pursuit?

Are You Chiefly Pursuing God? • Jim Elliot • October 8, 1927-January 9, 1956 • 29 Years Old • Gifted speaker, student and athlete, yet he chose to follow God to the remote jungles of Ecuador to reach an unreached people group with the gospel. • He and 4 other missionaries husbands and fathers we speared to death while seeking to make contact with the Auca Indians. • Journal entry dated Oct. 28, 1949, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what which he cannot lose.”

  9. ARE YOU INTENTIONALLY LEARNING FROM LIFE’S LESSONS • Good understanding gains favor, But the way of the unfaithful is hard. • Proverbs 13:15 • A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished. • Proverbs 22:3

ARE YOU INTENTIONALLY LEARNING FROM LIFE’S LESSONS • Are You walking with the wise • What Kind of Legacy are you leaving? • “Whose Your Lady?” • “We Can Do It!” –Mother’s Day • “Does Your Presence bring blessing or burden?” • “Careful or Careless?” • Jesus is Wisdom • “Follow Dad as I follow Jesus”-Father’s Day • Don’t Settle for foolishness • “Look to the Ant!” • “Who is in the driver’s seat of your life?” • “Show Me the Money” • To have a friend, you must be a friend! • The way of the unfaithful is hard

Are you currently doing what you know to be right? • But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves • James 1:22 • He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him. In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, But the lips of the wise will preserve them. Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; But much increase comes by the strength of an ox. • Proverbs 14:2–4

ARE YOU INTENTIONALLY LEARNING FROM LIFE’S LESSONS • Word of Warning: • Proverbs 26:11, “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a soul repeats his folly” • Proverbs 17:10, “A single rebuke does more for a person of understanding than a hundred lashes on the back of a fool” (New Living Translation) • “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” • George Santayan, Reason in C

One Final Look at Lady Wisdom • Proverbs 1:20-33 • 20-21 she is calling for your attention in the open arena • 22-27 there is danger for those that refuse to hear her • 28-32 Lady Wisdom will ignore your calls and laugh at the calamity of those that refused her • 33 Lady Wisdom offers safety and security for those who follow her
