  4. A Minangkabau Fable • 600 years ago, a Javanese king told the people of West Sumatra that he would stealtheir land. • If they resisted him, all of the people would be killed. • The Sumatran people did not want to go to war because the Javanese king wastoo powerful. • After talking together, they decided to have a buffalo fight. • If the Javanese buffalo won, then the Sumatran people would surrender. • If the Sumatran buffalo won, the Javanese solders would leave Sumatra. • The Javanese king’s buffalo was big and strong. • The Sumatran people took a buffalo calf and attached sharp knives to its horns. • Because it was hungry, the buffalo calf ran after the big buffalo, looking for milk under its belly. • The big buffalo was wounded, pierced by the knives and it fell down unconscious. • The Sumatran people cried out “The winning Buffalo!” And that is why • that district is known as Minangkabau.

  7. The Goat and The Crocodile • Once upon a time, a very thirsty goat was looking for water in a paddock • Finally he arrived at a river • At the edge of the river, he could see something like a log of wood appearing out of the water. • He thought “Hmmm, I might take a careful look at that thing’ • He called out from afar: “Who or what are you?” • The thing was silent and did not move • Then the goat called out: ’Hey, thing, if you’re a crocodile be really quiet and still. But if you’re just a piece of wood, please move so I wont be scared.’ • Suddenly, the thing moved. • Therefore the goat knew that the thing was actually a crocodile. • Said the goat: “ You really are stupid, Crocodile! As if a piece of wood could move by itself!” • And then the goat ran far away from that place.

  10. The Buffalo and the Pig • Once upon a time a buffalo was walking with a pig in the forest. • ‘ There is no one stronger and bigger than me.” said the buffalo arrogantly. • ‘I may be little but I am stronger than you’ replied the pig. • ‘Hey, piggy, look at these horns, long and pointy. • If I lose you can have them” • ‘Buffalo, certainly I am small, but I am very strong. If I lose, you can have my nose’ • In a cornfield, with his big sharp horns, the buffalo broke down a really tall strong fence. • He went in and ate all of the corn. • The pig could not get in. • In a vegetable patch enclosed by barbed wire, the pig ducked insideandfinished off all the vegetables. • The buffalo wasn’t willing to go in himself. • It seemed, both of them had equally won.

  13. Why KebayanNever Became Rich • Once upon a time, a god appeared in front of Kebayanand his wife. • “Kebayan,” said the God. • “I will grant you two wishes, but only two. Talk it over with your wife before you do anything” • Kebayanand his wife argued. • He wanted to be made rich but his wife wanted a big store of rice. • Finally Kebayanbecame extremely angry and said “I wish that god would turnyou into a monkey!!” • Straight away, his wife turned into a monkey. • Because he didn’t want a monkey for a wife, Kebayan wished for his wife to be turned back into a human. • The God granted his wish but both Kebayan’s wishes were used up. • His chance to get rich was used up as well so they lived in poverty for ever more.
