  • When Germany lost in World War 1, they were forced to sign The Treaty of Versailles. The country had to pay a lot of money to the winning countries. They were also not allowed to have an army.

  • The German population swallowed the bitter pill of defeat as the victorious Allies punished Germany severely.

  • The Nazi’s were originally called The German Worker’s Party. They were a right wing group and Adolf Hitler joined in 1919. He quickly became the leader because of his great speeches.

  • Germany was disarmed and was forced to pay reparations to France and Britain for the huge costs of the war.

  • Hitler organized an overthrow of the local government in Munich in 1923. This was called the Beer Hall Putsch. It failed and he went to jail for high treason. However, he did such a good job of defending himself in court that he only had a sentence of five years and was released after one.
