An Overview of Anglicanism Brief Introduction • The name "Anglican" means "of England", but the Anglican Church exists worldwide. • There are nearly 70 million members of the Anglican family in 37 self-governing Provinces in more than 160 countries. • During the English Reformation the church broke away from the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.

An Overview of Anglicanism Organization • The Archbishop of Canterbury is the chief bishop and principal leader of the Church of England, the symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury • The current archbishop is Rowan Williams. He is the 104th in a line that goes back more than 1400 years to St Augustine of Canterbury, who founded the oldest see in England in 597.

  5. An Overview of Anglicanism Lambeth Conferences Every 10 years there is a Lambeth Conference at which all of the bishops of the Anglican Communion gather to debate issues of doctrine. Anglican Consultative Council The Anglican Consultative Council meets at 3 year intervals, with representations of bishops, clergy, and laity chosen by the thirty-eight provinces.

An Overview of Anglicanism • Episcopal polity is a form of church governance which is hierarchical in structure with the chief authority over a local Christian church resting in a bishop. • There is no central authority of the Anglican Church. • The rules under which a church is governed are called canon law.

An Overview of Anglicanism Theology • Anglican sacramental theology expresses elements in keeping with its status as a church in the Catholic tradition and a church of the Reformation. • Formal doctrine of Anglican churches in other countries generally inherited the doctrinal apparatus of the Church of England, consisting most commonly an adaptation of the Thirty-Nine Articles and the Quadrilateral into general principles.

An Overview of Anglicanism Anglican Church of Canada (Structure) • Congregation: A gathering of Christians for worship in a particular place. • Parish: A gathering of Christians for worship in a particular place.  • Deanery: A grouping of parishes within a diocese, headed by a Regional Dean, that meet on a regular basis to deal with common concerns and problems. 

  13. An Overview of Anglicanism • Archdeaconery: A unit within a diocese, larger than a deanery, headed by an Archdeacon.  • Diocese A geographic area under the jurisdiction of a Diocesan Bishop as chief pastor. • Ecclesiastical Province A grouping of dioceses into a common area. 

  14. An Overview of Anglicanism • General Synod The national governing body of the Anglican Church of Canada.  • Anglican Communion The worldwide body of Anglicans currently numbering nearly 70 million members in 38 self-governing churches in 164 countries. 

  15. An Overview of Anglicanism A Brief History of the Anglican Church 1. The Church in Britain before Augustine Christians came to Britain from as early as 200AD.  The first British martyr was Alban. 2. The Church in the West before Augustine When Constantine became sole Emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire. He attributed this victory to the Christian God. Also the Emperor called a Council to finalize the creed we call the Nicene Creed. Jerome translated the whole Bible into Latin. which is known as the Vulgate.

  16. An Overview of Anglicanism 3. The Development of the Western Church Augustinecameas a missionary to Britain from Rome. He established a mission at Canterbury & became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Charlemagne: Pope Leo III crowned King Charles as the first Holy Roman Emperor. He built huge churches, and started a great program of copying manuscripts. He tried to remodel society on Christian lines and reformed the church’s liturgy.

An Overview of Anglicanism The Split between East and West • Charlemagne was also at the centre of the great debate between the Eastern and Western churches which eventually led to them splitting. • Universities In the 12th and 13th centuries heretical movements attracted many followers. But the church also established schools attached to cathedrals some of which became universities. This was the time when universities began to be established in Europe.

Movements Leading up to the Reformation • John Wyclifthought visible church, ruled over by Popes & bishops could not be true church. • William Tyndale translated the Bible into English in the early years of the 16th century. • Martin Luther, challenged the church and eventually the Pope about many of the abuses. He translated the Bible into German, to read it in their own language instead Latin.

The Reformation in England • The main reforms under King Henry VIII were: Service in English, Bible in English, removal of images, closing of Monasteries & theological change about justification by faith. • King Edward VI was a Protestant king and under his rule Cranmer and others were able to continue the reform of the English Church. Include the appearance of a fully English Prayer Book.

An Overview of Anglicanism • under King James IThe Authorised Version of the Bible (also known as the King James version) was published.He kept a balance between this group and the Puritan and reformed groups. • During King Charles I reign civil war broke out in Ireland, & England & Scotland. Parliament called a synod to reform the Church of England. And produced the Westminster Confession.

The Toleration Act was passed which allowed dissenters to worship independently. • In 18th century moral and spiritual life of England declined. New movements rose from the work of philosophers such as Newton, Locke, Pascal and Descartes. It is known as the Enlightenment. In Industrial Revolution people moved to cities to work in factories.

An Overview of Anglicanism • Evangelical revival led by John and Charles Wesley and George Whitfield changed England.  Missionary Societies were formed including the Church Missionary Society & British and Foreign Bible Society. Missionaries were sent to all parts of the world - wherever European colonial expansion allowed them.  Oxford Movement through tracts distribution  brought back some liturgical practices that helped at the Reformation.

  23. An Overview of Anglicanism 7. The Modern Anglican Communion now stretches around the world. Many currents have influenced the modern church, but four of these are important at present time. • Anglo-Catholicism: The Oxford Movement resulted in new developments in liturgy and theology. Many Anglican churches began to use rituals which had been abandoned at the Reformation • Post– Enlightenment Liberalism: Its theology developed from the Enlightenment. They began to question many assumptions about the Bible, especially whether miracles really happened.

An Overview of Anglicanism • Evangelicalism: The Reformers referred to themselves as evangelicals, and the evangelical current in the Anglican church has roots that go back to at least John Wyclif. • The Charismatic Movement: It is an adaptation of Pentecostalism made impact on the Anglican Church. • Recent Trends: A rift has developed between churches which hold traditional theology and those, who tried to adapt Christian teaching to their culture. Tensions concerning women’s ordination as priests and applying Bible to same sex relationships.
