  2. Culture 1:School Uniform (せいふく)

School Uniform: せいふく • せいふく (An Uniform) is commomamong most public schools • A way to identify students in general, but also a way to deter students from bad behavior • Tend to remain conservative in style (usually くろ, navy あお, or グレー) • Some schools now hire top fashion designers to design their せいふく to satisfy the tastes of today’s highly fashion-conscious teens

  4. “なんちゃって” せいふく • Stylish fashions with the look and feel of せいふく, called “なんちゃって (just kidding) せいふく” , are the latest hit among teen-agers • Students choose unofficial uniform-like clothes for their after school/weekends fashion • 日本のまんが inspires more people to wear かわいいせいふく not only for 日本人 but also people in overseas

  5. なつふくとふゆふく • Most school students have two sets of school uniform: a summer uniform (なつふく) and a winter uniform (ふゆふく) • All students switch from one uniform to the other on per-determined days in 五月 or 六月 and 十月

  7. “〜系” Fashion Style • Each Japanese fashion style is called “〜系(けい)”, means “~ style” • Especially teen-agers tend to categorize fashion, often as well as person’s character ひめ系 ギャル系 おにい系 ビジュアル系
