Basics and history • Gained its independence from what was then known as Kingdom of León in the 12th Century. • Maintained its original boarders since. • In the 15th and 16th Century Portugal became one of the most powerful and richest countries in the world by acquiring global maritime power. • In 1974 a military coup named the carnation revolution due to its peaceful nature ended 48 years of dictatorship with a mere 7 casualties. • Treaty of Windsor in 1836 established Anglo-Portuguese Alliance . Oldest diplomatic alliance and still in use.

  4. Food • Sunday is always spent having lunch with the family • lasting 4 or more hours. • Beer and especially wine is a daily part of Portuguese • Culture including in business meetings. • Knife and fork are placed parallel to each other in the • middle of the plate when finished.

  6. Manners • 2 kisses • Politeness and hierarchy even within family between parents and children. • Time relaxed. • Religious references. • Family orientated – mothers and boys. • Call to thank after a dinner. • Cannot avoid having a conversation when running daily errands.
