  2. Overview • Problem Statement • Important Dates • Background Information • Customer Information • Deliverables • Brainstorming • Research • Criteria & Constraints • Explore Possibilities • Select an Approach • Bill of Material • Drawings • Build Process • Testing

  3. Problem Statement Our group is participating in the Team America Rocketry Challenge in which we must design, build, and launch a rocket carrying an egg. The rocket must reach an altitude of 750 feet with a flight time between 40-45 seconds without causing harm to the egg.

  4. Important Dates

  5. Background Forces used in equations Maximum velocity Burn time Descent speed Boost phase Coast phase Wind resistance

  6. Background • Parts of a model rocket

  7. Scope Statement • Purpose • Customers • Mrs. Brandner • Mr. Pritchard • Materials • Criteria and Constraints • Scheduling Conflicts • Track schedule

  8. Deliverables • Rocket • PowerPoint • Technical Report • Testing Results • Engineering Notebook

  9. Brainstorming

  10. Research

  11. Research (continued) • Fin shape • Trapezoidal (most common) • Elliptical • RockSim • Design • Testing

  12. Criteria & Constraints • Target altitude – 750 ft. • Flight time between 40-45 seconds • <1000 grams (2.2 pounds) • One stage engines • Commercially-made engines listed in handbook • ≤62.5 grams of propellant

  13. Criteria & Constraints (continued) • No pyrotechnic charge other than engine instructions permit • Parachute only recovery system for egg and altimeter • Parachute must be 15 (+/-1) inches in diameter • Not commercially-made kits

  14. Explore Possibilities • Possible body tubes • Blue Tube • Quantum Tube • Group member sketches

  15. Explore Possibilities (continued) Michael’s Sketch

  16. Explore Possibilities (continued) Josafat’s Sketch

  17. Explore Possibilities (continued) Madelyn’s Sketch

  18. Select an Approach Body Tube Design Matrix

  19. Select an Approach (continued) Nose Cone Design Matrix

  20. Final Solution Design Matrix

  21. Final Solution Design (continued)

  22. Final Solution Design (continued)

  23. Final Solution Design (continued)

  24. Final Solution Design (continued)

  25. Final Solution Design (continued)

  26. Bill of Material

  27. Bill of Material (continued)

  28. Bill of Material (continued)

  29. Bill of Material (continued)

  30. Work Process • Body Tube • Bulkheads • Motor mount • Fins • Overall assembly

  31. Test Plan Template

  32. Test Results

  33. Test Results (continued)

  34. Test Results First flight

  35. Test Results Second flight

  36. Test Results Third flight

  37. Test Results Fourth flight

  38. Refinements • Larger motors • Perfectly straight fins • Larger fins • Extra air to altimeter

  39. Summary • Did not qualify for TARC • Overall failure rate • Almost $300 total cost

  40. Lessons Learned • Stay away from trees • Drop rockets from 400 ft., not 4 ft. (Michael) • “All we do is [fail at] rockets.” • With revision comes improvement
