  1. Environmental Science Final Project

Topic Selection • Topic Selection- Individual or partners • Visit at least 5 websites from the list available on the class page (resources and multimedia) • Write a summary of at least 1 article that references a topic of your choice • Submit your topic and reason via google form • Homework section

  3. References • Assemble at least 5 REPUTATBLE web references that support your chosen topic • Write a summary of each reference • Cite all 5 references in MLA format • See class page or poster to left of star board for MLA reminders/tips • Refer to what we discussed with our Do-Now to determine credibility • Check with Mr. Tran if unsure! • YOU DO NOT NEED TO FILL OUT THE GOOGLE FORM FOR THE REMAINING ARTICLES • Mr. Tran will check these on Monday

  4. What is “reputable” or “credible”? • Ask these questions about possible Internet and/or database sources: • Does the site author list qualifications? Is the author an authority? Government and university websites are reputable. • Does the author cite sources? Are those sources referenced? • Does the site or article sound credible? Is the tone authoritative? • Is the database article from a peer-reviewed source? This lends credibility. • Is the article timely? Was it written in the last 3-5 years? Earlier information may have been disproven or modified. • Is the information fair and objective? • Does the information validate or refute your understanding of the issue? Can the article be used as evidence in your document? • Does the author back-up his or her arguments? • Is the website active? Check URL links (Stapleton & Helms-Park, 2006). • Was the information retrieved from Wikipedia? This is not a reputable source. Look-up and study any reference material at the bottom of the Wiki page for possible use.

  5. Nonprofit • Form your non profit organization • Choose a unique organization name • Draw a logo that represents your organization • Write a mission statement that highlights your organization’s goals and values • SEE CLASS PAGE DOCUMENTS SECTION FOR DETAILS!

  6. Solutions • Propose unique solutions to the problem • Design at least 3 possible solutions to the environmental problem that are not currently in use today • Be creative; may be dependent on development of future technologies • Type all solutions in a google doc to be pasted onto your website and trifold poster • 5-6 sentences each!

  7. Website • Website Construction • Create a google site (or other approved website) that highlights your nonprofit • Include your mission statement, logo (if possible), and useful website links and descriptions that support your topic

How to create a google site • Class page-> resources and multimedia • Watch the youtube video and read the attached link to instructions • Name of Website MUST follow this format: • Sites.google.com/site/firstname(s)topic • Ex. Sites.google.com/site/donaldicemelt • Ex. Sites.google.com/site/donaldbustericemelt • ADVICE: use a personalgoogle account instead of your roselleschools account • That way your work will be saved even after this school year • NOTE: Google SITES will not save your work automatically. You must click “Save” in the top right corner to save your work after editing a page

  9. Poll of Solutions • Poll of best solution • Create a google form that polls which solutions students best relate to • Use the polled data to create a bar graph showing the most popular solution to your organization’s environmental problem

  10. Trifold Display • Trifold display • Include 1) your group’s organization name 2) logo 3) mission statement 4) overview of environmental problem 5) 3 proposed solutions 6) poll results of best solutions 7) in depth description/step by step action plan based on winning solution 8) final works cited page in MLA format

  11. Commercial/Newscast • Create a video commercial or newscast • A final (typed) copy of your script will be due at the time of your conference • Due to time constraints, filming a video commercial or newscast that highlights your group’s environmental problem and most popular solution will be worth +2 bonus points

  12. Pre-Conference • Create a business card and handout/flyer • Remember to update your google site to include as much information as possible that you have gathered regarding the environmental problem and its possible solutions

  13. Environmental Conference • Environmental conference/presentations • Each group will present their trifold poster, website, hand out business cards and flyers • Remember to stay in character! You are a member of a real nonprofit organization
