Semantics in Astronomy: Leveraging Vocabularies for Registry and Event Handling

Explore the use of vocabularies for VOEvent handling, theory discussions, and registry maintenance in the field of astronomy. Discussions cover vocabulary formats, versions, maintenance, and inclusion of mappings. Learn about potential events like lensing, gravitational waves, and more.

  1. Semantics: Session 3 Joint Session: Semantics, VOEvent(, Theory, Registry)

  2. Agenda: • Using vocabularies • VOEvent • Vocabularies and the registry (SD) • Discussion on how to exploit the vocabularies in a VO, e.g. by VOEvent, theory, the registry, etc. • A draft vocabulary for simulations (F.Le Petit)

  3. Vocabularies: Open Issues (1/3) • Format of the master vocabulary: nothing mandated • Format of the distributed vocabularies: mandating RDF/XML(Turtle optional) • Identifying vocabulary versions: Unversioned namespace. Vocabulary maintainers keep old RDF files available long-term.

  4. Vocabularies: Open Issues (2/3) • Who maintains vocabularies? Author (IG/WG adopting the vocabularies) = maintainer. Semantics for those (5) in WD plus IVOAT • What vocabularies are included in the standard? The 5 in the WD (A&A, UCD, IAU93, AVM, Contellations). IVOAT (replacing IAU93) in separate doc.

  5. Vocabularies: Open Issues (3/3) • Inclusion of mappings in vocabularies • recommended that vocabularies declare no inter-vocab mappings; • such mappings are published separately; • mappings declared in one direction; • metadata required in a mapping file: DC terms; • how to generate mappings: wiki-like thing.

  6. Possible events (Roy’s list - Victoria06): • Lensing event (MACHO) • Gravitational wave signal • Asteroid / KBO • M dwarf flare • Unknown radio transient • Transit of extra-solar planet

  7. Possible events (Roy’s list - Victoria06): • Lensing event (MACHO) • IAU93:microlensing • AOIM:Cosmology Phenomenon Lensing • IVOAT:gravitationalMicrolensing • Gravitational wave signal • IAU93:gravitational wave • IVOAT:gravitationalWave • A&A: Gravitational waves

  8. Asteroid / KBO • AOIM: Interplanetary Body: Asteroid • IAU93: asteroids • IVOAT: asteroid • A&A: Minor planets, asteroids • IVOAT: EdgeworthKuiperBeltObject (KBO) • M dwarf flare • IAU93: flarestars>dwarfstars>Mdwarfstars • IVOAT: redDwarfFlareStar • AOIM: Star: Type: Variable: Flare Star

  9. Unknown radio transient • IAU93: radiosources>variablesources • Transit of extra-solar planet • IAU93:transit; planets>extrasolarplanets • IVOAT:transit; extrasolarPlanet • AOIM:PlanetSpecialCasesTransiting
