ASTM F3502 Standard - CDC-Endorsed Cloth Masks

ASTM F3502-21 is only non-medical fabric face mask standard recognized by the CDC for reusable barrier face coverings. To meet the F3502 requirements, masks must be laboratory tested to achieve significant levels of fine-aerosol filtration, along with a "breathability factor" at least twice as good as the limit for a medical respirator.

  1. ASTM F3502 Mask Labels, Explained SPECIFICATION FOR BARRIER FACE COVERINGS TWO LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE: Filtration Efficiency Breathability (Higher = Better) (Lower = Better) < 20% Fail > 20% Level 1 > 50% Level 2 >15mm Fail <5mm Level 2 <15mm Level 1 WAIT! WAIT! *N95 respirators have a limit of 35mm. Isn't 20% kind of... low? so... out... of... 20% 20% SOUNDS LOW, BUT... breath... SOUNDS LOW, BUT... Breathing resistance is measured in millimeters The Filtration Efficiency score is for sub- micron particles, even smaller than a virus! Larger airborne particles are filtered at exponentially greater rates. IN OTHER WORDS: IN OTHER WORDS: Level: The bigger the 2 2 particle, the easier 1 - 5mm it is to capture! 1 1 6 - 15mm Filtration Efficiency "most penetrating particle size" 15mm+ *N95 masks test at 35mm This is a failing grade range Particle Size Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) reporting is optional Electrostatic filter inserts can increase the BFE score to 90% or more The BFE score helps by showing effectiveness against slightly larger virus-carrying particles. Nonwoven filters provide 'electrostatic' protection from smaller particles ASTM surgical masks need a BFE score of at least 95% Woven fabric provides 'mechanical' protection from larger particles ONE MORE THING... ONE MORE THING... The manufacturer must conduct a "Fit Analysis" to make sure leakage is minimal and the mask sufficiently covers the wearer's nose & mouth. The F3502 standard offers best-in-class protection and breathability. That's why it's the only non-medical face covering standard recognized by the CDC. ASTM F3502. Raise your standards.
