Empowering Educators in Mpumalanga: NIHE Projects and Initiatives Update

  3. Support projects: Mpumalanga Department of Education (MDE) • ABET educators training programme • 40 educators • In partnership with UNISA • Higher Certificate Programme (2 year programme)

  4. Support projects: MDE (Cont.) • Dinaledi schools development programme • 97 educators • Programme offered through UNISA • Focussing on the teaching of Maths, Science and English for educators • Focussing on Management Skills for School Principals • 1 year programme

  5. Ehlanzeni District Municipality (EDM) research support project • A product of the Vulindlela Forum • The NIHE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the EDM • To assist the municipality develop research projects emanating from identified problem areas in the municipality focus areas

Ehlanzeni District Municipality research support project (cont.) • EDM to identify qualifying employees to undertake postgraduate research study focussing on the identified areas (research topics) • A multi-faceted benefit factor – HR development; scientific solutions to challenges; personal growth

  7. 2013 NIHE Higher Education Seminar • Held on 19 July 2013 at the Siyabuswa Campus • Theme • The teaching profession in the 21st century: challenges and opportunities • Topics covered • The status of teacher development in Mpumalanga Province • A teacher as an ethical and normative professional • The code of practice for a teacher: a South African Council for Educators (SACE) perspective • The teaching school – a practical concept in teacher development

  8. 2013 NIHE Higher Education Seminar (cont.) • Attendance • 250 participants • Audience • The students on Campus; Foundation Phase Educators; School Principals; MDE; Department of Basic Education; UJ Faculty of Education Foundation Phase lecturers; South African Principals Association; District and local municipalities.
