  1. In Christ pt 6 General review – overview “The finished work Gospel”

  2. Welcome church Eph 4:11-16  11 And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. 12 His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church), 13 [That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the [[b]full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ’s own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him. 14 So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and cleverness of [c]unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead. 15 Rather, let our lives lovingly [d]express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). 16 For because of Him the whole body (the church, in all its various parts), closely joined and firmly knit together by the joints and ligaments with which it is supplied, when each part [with power adapted to its need] is working properly [in all its functions], grows to full maturity, building itself up in love.

  3. In the beginningThat wasn’t a beginning (before time) • God is • God is love, and wanted to share himself • God created • Obviously an orderly God had a purposeful creation • God said • It is written, about what He created

  4. So then, God created… Let’s see, heavens and earth, plants and animals… yup, “good” so far… Anything else?

  5. People? Yes, of course… I’m getting to that. But what else besides people?

  6. TIME…

  7. Ok, then God made mankindand said , “VERY good” How was man made? • Immortal • Given a purpose that fit his design, and help • Commanded not to eat (sin) • But able to sin, or not too He was made In God’s (plural) image / reflection of nature, and with 3 parts: body, soul, spirit

  8. Three parts • Body Obviously, that’s what your body is made of, but when we speak of “flesh”, there are a couple other things we might mean… • Soul The “heart” is: throne of the soul and seat of all motivational thinking • Will – submits • Mind – thinks • Emotions – feelings follow • Conscience – agrees with the feelings - can be seared, reprobate • Self-conscious – not from God, but from the apple (answer = 2B “in Christ”) • Spirit An eternal capacity, but …from the time of being “born of water,”until we are, “Born again of the Spirit”, we are eternally and spiritually dead– separated from God.

  9. The three (apparent) uses of the word “flesh” 1 - FLESH as the physical body 2 - FLESH as the sensual desires 3 - FLESH as our “Sinfulness”

  10. So, about that tree… But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Gen 2:17

  11. Well then, what happened?

  12. Yup, we know the story • They ate… • She was deceived, naturally… • He chose to rebel, and was judged accordingly

  13. STOP! Did they do something naughty?

  14. Did they die? “…The day you eat. You die”

  15. How (and when) did Adam/Eve die that day - by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Clearly they did die, and on that day they ate. The remaining question is how… ?

  16. Man is spirit, soul, body • Did mans body die THAT DAY? • Did mans Soul die THAT DAY? Hmm… what's left? Spirit We could also ask, in what way does God give us back eternal life when we are “saved” ?

  17. How did Adam (and Eve) die by sin? They died spiritually, that day • The process of death was continual - Hebrew: an absolute beginning but a continuing process (personal/generational) • Sin eventually killed their body as well - James 1:13-15 James 1:13-15 :13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (to what? To become one with the temptation of lust)15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

  18. So, they broke the law – “sinned” And died that day Is that all that happened?

  19. In the beginning… • Adam and Eve had the ability to sin! (obviously!) • They also had the ability not to sin • Sin was not yet in them, but Eve, being a properly subjective and responsive girl, was tempted and deceived (1st Tim 2:11-14) , lust was conceived and its fruit was sin (Jms 1:13-15), and under the (then) law of, “thou shalt not eat,” they were guilty, and righteously judged (Rom). Note, Adam wasn’t deceived, he chose.. And it was through HIM that sin came to all generations… • The wages of sin is death - they died that day a spiritual death of separation from the source of eternal life, fellowship with God, and they were banished from His presence. They were sent out of the garden and away from the tree of “eternal” life so that now, with the knowledge of good and evil, they would not live in such a state eternally…

  20. One aspect of the judgment, the curse, was that sin, which was NOT originally in (or part of them), now was. • Sin is now internally based (Rom 7:17,20). • It seems most likely that this “sin” is based, literally, “in the flesh,” and not in the soul. Mainly because this is the language the bible uses regarding it. Also, because it is consistent with the pattern of God judging in accordance with transgression. They listened to their flesh, to satisfy their flesh, and their flesh was cursed (work for food, labor pains) Sin is not eradicated even at salvation, a quickening of their soul. Rather, sin is still present until they receive a new glorified body! • Sin was now in their flesh and their nature was NOW subject to it’s jurisdiction, especially with out the light and influence of the presence of God… This is the state passed on to all mankind!

  21. Original sin, was not original… • Sin was not part of Adam and Eve in the garden. • They had the ability to sin • They also had the ability not to sin. • They chose willfully to sin • Sin (the nature) came to them – • through disobedience (Adam – Rom 5:12) • It is not them, nor part of them, but now IN them • This sin is inherited by us, defining our nature • Until saved… 

  22. Is this the only death?

  23. 3 deaths Death in our person • Spiritual – soul separated from God • Physical – spirit separate from body • Eternal - Soul dies, forever Death in our time • Now – born spiritually dead • Latter – physically dying • Forever – but not if you have the gift of eternal life

  24. This is all a very sad story… Uh, what’s it got to do with us? We didn’t eat the apple…

  25. DEATH came from Adam?Original sin-nature - imputed sin guilt - personal sin trespasses Rom 5:12-14 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 1Co 15:21-22 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Death in Adam, Life in Christ (Genesis 3:1-7; Genesis 7:1-5; 2 Peter 3:1-9)

  26. So we too, were born dead, and dying and from sin…? Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) • Remember: • 3 types of death (spiritual dead, physically dying, eternal death) • 3 types of sin (original/nature, imputed/guilt, personal deeds)

  27. This is the work of the 1st Adamand what we inherited from him The 1st Adam • He was anatural man • He “disobeyed” and “transgressed” (willfully chose to sin) • So a sin nature comes to all men, “the many (all) who died” • He brought us a nature of sin, and the consequence of death • “Sin  Death” passed to all • Rom 5: 19 all made sinners (had sin nature, so they sinned) • One sinned  all given unmerited judgment (“inherited sin/death”, not imputed sin) From the 1st Adam: Sin, judgment, condemnation, death

  28. So here we are… Born of water, somehow alive, but still… Spiritual stillborns… Our bodies dying and headed for the grave, Our soul passing through on the way to forever IN HELL Thanks Adam!

  29. The wages of sin… … is death

  30. What is sin?

  31. 3 types of sin • Original or inherited sin – our moral condition • A Sin Nature, inherited from Adam • Sins consequence of death “reigned” in all men • Rom 5:12-19 through one man, sin and death entered • Gen 3:17-19 you shall return to dust! • Imputed sin – our legal standing before God (under law, for sins) • Sins guilt “credited” to our account (our sin, our account) • According to law - from Moses and on… all sinned • Only Adam / Eve had a “law” of “don’t eat” • Rom 5:13-14 no sin without law, never the less, death reigned • Rom 4:15, 5:13, 7:7-13 sin became sinful… all have sinned • Personal sin - our actual behavior (sins done because of sin in us) • Sin, the personified noun’s, consequent manifestations • Now “all have sinned” and we are (were) “Dead in trespasses and sins”

  32. What is “sin” and where is it? Sin is a (personified) noun – and not us. It dwells in our flesh Sin is a deviant force – a malicious corruption • Not just an option for us, but an intent against us.. Form within • Itmanifest in/through our physical bodies. It is not part of our Christian identity … • … because we are defined by our birth, which determines our nature. • Without the power of the cross, the law of sin and death reigns in all men • Through the power (work) of the cross, we escape the corruption of lust 1st pt 1:4 • When we are not saved: • It dominates and defines our very nature • We have no hope to ultimately deny it • We are “because of our nature” children of wrath (not just for deeds done, but for the sin that produces them) • When we are saved : • it wars against our new nature through lust, appealing (1st person-as us) to our mind • But we have a new nature and partake of it through “FW truth reckoning”

  34. What about law Strength of sin is law

  35. The law… • Adam had a law to keep. • What was it? • Who all was accountable to keep it? • Did anyone else since have a law to live under? • Jews, Gentiles, Christians…? • Are Christians under “the law” ? Law of life and liberty set us free from the law of sin and death • What is the difference between : • Original sin? • Imputed sin? • Personal sin?

  36. Could Adam have never sinned? • Can unregenerate man live without ever sinning? • Can a Christian live without ever sinning • Can Christians chose to sin like as Adam could have? • Do Christians still have sin in them? • Did Adam have sin in him when he chose to rebel? • Are Christians now redeemed back to Adams pre-fall state? • What do we have that Adam did not? 2thingz: sin in us, Christ's victory implemented by the HS • What does it mean that Christ is the first born (first fruits) of many? (think likeness) • Who's nature are we being conformed to? • Are we fully redeemed already? • What is the last enemy?

  37. Rom 2:6-15 think “sin nature”All have sinned , and all are guilty and condemned! Rom 2:6-15 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11For there is no respect of persons with God. 12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers (in Christ) of the law shall be justified. 14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

  38. Can we fix our problem? Apparently not That’s why we are only … “saved by grace, not of works. It’s a GIFT of God that none may boast”

  39. Flesh is not ever capable of obtaining, adding to, or keeping our salvation! No flesh will glory in God’s presence. It will always be short of perfect in anything it does because it will always have sin in it - while still on earth - unglorified! For Christians on earth now (pre, “that day”), only the Spirit is “saved” (in time, so far), though we are promised a full redemption of our body in the future - which would include the eradication of sin and the need for sanctification, as well as the need for faith and hope The Holy Spirit is a deposit guaranteeing that. Additionally, we are being progressively sanctified in the flesh through the word now while we wait. Jn 17:17

  40. What is Gods answer?

  41. The 2nd Adam The 2nd Adam (Christ) • He was a spiritual man • He obeyed the law perfectly • So, a new nature and new lifeabounds to many (the elect) • He brought us (His) righteousness (imputed, in trad for our sin) • “justification  reconciliation” abounds to all (all who believe) • One obeyed “all” given unmerited grace (imputed righteousness) From the 2nd Adam: grace, justification, righteousness, life (eternal) NOTE: in v15, v19 the words transgression and disobedience ascribed to Adam are not the same Greek word used for (our) sin, but stronger words denoting Adams willful rebellion… which he made without a “sin nature”

  42. Rom 6:2-11; • Our position in eternity debt paid, already perfect • Our reality now dead to sin, alive to God • Our option now reckon dead to sin, alive to God, and walk in life 1) The law that obligated us was fulfilled by Christ’s perfect performance of flesh . That perfect flesh was sacrificed on our behalf, and the perfect performance was credited to our account. Therefore sin is not an issue ANYMORE period, because; the law was fulfilled by perfect flesh AND the penalty due for sinful flesh was paid. There is therefore now no condemnation (ever) if you are in Christ! (Period) This was a legal transaction that we had nothing to do with, beside being undeserving beneficiaries… We are now righteous before God forever despite our performance!(for/aft) We did nothing to save ourselves. We cannot, and need not do anything to keep ourselves! 2) At the same time; and in a VERY real way – the element of sin that bound the old man we were, is STILL in our flesh - BUT it has literally been rendered powerless against the new man that we now are. The only way sin can reign on our (still) mortal bodies now is if we yield our members to it, and we do not need to. 3) So then, we are to reckon that we, as the new man raised and alive as Christ, are dead to the dead old man’s sinful bondage. Because that is really not who we are any more!

  43. Col 2:10-15 Christians are complete(only) “in Christ;” • Christians are no longer the old man stuck in the flesh with sin, • The body of sin was cut off by Christ. We are forgiven and justified • Sin shall not have dominion over us. We are not under the law • Christians are no longer under the obligation and condemnation of the law • The law (obligation) was fulfilled and the debt “blotted out” v14 • We are also free from the laws curse for (past) sin Gal 3:13 • Christians are no longer needfully subject to the tyranny of Satan through sin and death… v 14 • also James 4:1-10, esp v7) Submit to God, resist the devil, and he flees And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. “Spoiled” means “looted.” The “strong man” was tied and plundered of his keys… Rev 1:18 Christ, alive from the dead, has the keys of Hell and of death!

  44. Gods answer is salvation? Saved from what?

  45. The wrath of God Why wrath?

  46. Sin, of course We were all, by nature, children of wrath

  47. What exactly is salvation? Hmm…. Marvel not… you must be born again!... Of the Spirit

  48. The (Finished Work) gospel Ephesians 1:13-14 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

  49. What is the gospel? • Romans road? • Four spiritual laws? • “God has a wonderful plan for your life” And all you have to do is… Walk the isle and ask Jesus into your heart Or maybe Raise your hand and say a prayer?

  50. Could you be more specific? Ok, every one is a sinner, well, no ones perfect. Anyway, the wages of sin is death but Jesus died so you don’t have to. Now you can go to heaven when you die (and not to hell) All you have to do is say this prayer and really mean it. “Dear Jesus, I know I have sinned, please forgive me and come into my heart and save me so I can go to heaven. Thanks, amen! Now you are a Christian… uh, you should read your bible and find a good church…
