Brief history of child and adolescent psychiatry in Turkey
  • Initially, psychiatry units in Turkey were established and operated by doctors who were educated abroad.
  • In 1979, Dr. Aydın was tasked with the job of initiating a child psychiatry department at Ege University.

Dr. Aydın, three psychiatrists, one social worker, one nurse and one child development trainer comprised the first team of the child psychiatry department that functioned independently from the adult unit.

In 1990, child psychiatry was accepted as a main branch of health care. The same year the first medical student passed the required examinations to acquire a specialty in medicine.

Since then, numerous clinicians have graduated from the University’s program and continue to work with the doctors and professors who orginated the University Child and Adolescent Psy. Department.
