  6. The future of CV Research

  7. The future of CV Research • Investment in cardiovascular research brings results • CVD will remain n°1 killer globally - women, underprivileged at high risk • Economic cost for the EU (direct & indirect): €300 billion/year

  8. The future of CV Research Challenges • Clinical Research in EU has declined sharply in recent years • EU has lost its dominant position as source of new treatments since 1990 • Failing to attract young clinicians to science careers

  9. The future of CV Research Research priorities of the next 10 years: • Understanding the biological links between atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and obesity • Prediction of atherosclerosis plaque behaviour • Molecular basis of failing myocardium; Differentiation of CV cells • Understanding change in heart rhythm

  10. The future of CV Research Research priorities of the next 10 years: 5. Individual tailored treatment • Gene & stem cell therapy • Mechanisms of ageing in the CV system • Cardiovascular vulnerability of women

  11. The future of CV Research Research strategy for Europe: • ESC strongly supports FP7 • ESC supports a doubling of the FP7 budget • Consistent with the Lisbon strategy • to increase R&D spend as % of GDP In Europe • To reverse the decline in Europe’s R&D competitiveness

  12. The future of CV Research Research strategy for Europe: • ESC supports the creation of a European research Council to coordinate research in Europe • ESC supports the creation of a technology platform for Europe to restore R&D competitiveness

  13. The future of CV Research Research needs to be prioritised around the needs of the people of Europe. • Health priorities based on causes of death and disability should direct investment. • Development of new biotechnologies must be directed to solving the most pressing needs to achieve their full potential. • “Blind” technology is not the answer.
