  1. Welcome to Kindergarten • 4 Kindergarten teachers • Ann Ancarrow • Martha Cahill • Margarita Garcia • Lauren Zindler

  2. MISSION STATEMENT:Our purpose, in partnership with families and community, is to develop each child intellectually, artistically, emotionally, physically, and socially so that all students are life-long learners, complex thinkers, responsible global citizens and effective communicators.

  3. Arrival Time: The cafeteria opens at 7:30 am. The children who are not eating breakfast in the cafeteria, and arrive at school between 7:30 and 7:45 must report to the gym. They sit quietly and read until they are dismissed to their classrooms at 7:45. All children should be in their classrooms by 7:50 for morning announcements, class begins at 8:00. Children are sent to the office for a tardy slip at 8:05 if they are not in the classroom!

  4. Dismissal: Our day ends at 1:50. All car riders and walkers (new from last year) will exit through the Upper Lake doors by cafeteria. Please display your child’s name in the front car window all year long on the green card provided. If you need another one, please let your child’s teacher know. All daycare and deaf ed. bus riders will exit through the Oak Briar doors by office. YMCA children will be taken to the cafeteria. • If for some reason your dismissal plan changes, please notify your child’s teacher in writing or call the office at 281-641-1890 before 1:30. Do NOT leave a message on the teacher’s voice mailbox. Anyone picking up your child MUST be on their green information card in the office. • * Early release days- Both siblings that walk together each need to have a note to notify each of their teachers. Older siblings will walk to their class to pick them up, and each teacher needs to be made aware.

  5. Attendance:Please send in a note every time your child is absent. Call the school at 281-641-1819 to notify the school of your child’s absence by 9:30. It is very important to have your child to school on time every day – instruction begins in the classroom at 8:00 am. Kindergarten is about learning hands on; it is very difficult to make up work if they are absent. You have 48 hours to send a note. They will be marked as truant if you fail to do so.

  6. Clothing: Please refer to page DM-11&12 in your student handbook for the dress code. The district prohibits: high heeled shoes, flip-flops, cleated shoes and wheeled shoes for safety reasons. If your child is in flip flops/backless shoes, he or she will not be allowed on any playground equipment. Comfortable clothing is very important. Hairstyles must me neat, clean, and not distracting. Please make sure that your child can get in and out of their clothes to use the restroom independently. Our building is sometimes chilly. You might want to put a lightweight jacket or sweater in your child’s backpack. Please put your child’s name on all jackets, backpacks, lunchboxes, etc.

  7. Lunch: We go to lunch at 10:45 am. The daily cost of a lunch tray is $1.85. Milk may be purchased for $0.50. Breakfast may also be purchased at 7:30am for $1.20. • You may deposit money in your child’s account in the cafeteria or online. All children have account numbers and use this when purchasing lunch and breakfast. Ice cream is also sold, and if purchased will be added to your child’s account. Ice cream is 0.75. Please practice memorizing ID numbers at home. Applications for free and reduced lunch MUST be returned as soon as possible in order to be put into effect. • If your child brings their lunch, please make sure that you send a non-carbonated drink in their lunchbox. They may also purchase milk in the cafeteria. • If you send money to school for any reason, please put it in an envelope with your child’s name, the amount of money and what it is to be used for (Ex: Sue Smith $1.85 Lunch Money). • Please feel free to come eat lunch with your child and your child only, and sit at the Guest Table. On the morning of your lunch visit, please send a note if you will be eating a lunch tray so we can add that count onto our lunch count. • The cafeteria phone number is 281-641-1808. • Online lunch payment: MyNutriKids.com

  8. Daily binders: Each child will bring home a binder daily. Included in this binder will be a behavior sheet, poetry, word wall words, reading homework, math homework, the The Owly News (our weekly school newsletter is sent out Thursdays), and many important papers. • Please sign and return the binder everyday. • Discipline Plan: You should have already received a PBS handbook. If you still need one, please let your child’s teacher know. At the Oaks, we are safe, responsible, and respectful. The handbook addresses what we expect of all students in order to maintain and ensure a caring, safe learning environment. • Conferences and Report Cards: Humble ISD Elementary Schools follow a nine-week reporting period. Fall and Spring conferences will be scheduled at a later date. The dates that report cards will be sent home will be in The Owly News and is posted online.

  9. Clinic: Maureen Humes is our school nurse. Please bring any medication to be given at school to Mrs. Humes in its original container with the proper form completed.

  10. Birthdays: We celebrate our classmates’ birthdays all year long. If you would like to send a simple birthday treat for each child in the class, you may do so on your child’s birthday. If your child has a summer birthday, please feel free to choose any day to celebrate with a treat at school. Please let your child’s teacher know when you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday. Examples of treats include: store bought cookies, cupcakes or muffins. Another option is to purchase ice cream for your child’s class from the cafeteria during lunch (you may send money for this). All Birthday celebrations start at 1:00 and end at 1:40. Parents and siblings are no longer allowed back to classrooms for birthdays. • *Invitations to parties held outside of school or events hosted or sponsored by parents cannot be distributed at school. Please refer to the Student Handbook page 40 for more information.

  11. PTA: Please join the PTA ($6.00 per person). PTA needs more male volunteers to join the team! Check The Owly News for more details about PTA activities. All PTA news and information will be on blue paper. Student success is dependent on parent/ teacher partnership and teamwork. • Student Handbook: Please read your student handbook, fill out and return pages 55-62 by Friday, August 27th.
