  1. Five Simple Solutions to Fix a Car Key That Won’t Turn in the Ignition February 11, 2022 We’ve all been there before. The car is packed up and your ready to go. You put your car key into the ignition and CLUNK. It won’t turn. What should you do next? There are actually a few simple solutions that you can try that can fix the problem. 1.) Simply turn the steering wheel. Sometimes, your steering wheel can lock up after you’ve removed your car key and then moved your steering wheel again. Start by turning the steering wheel right to left. If you notice one side has more give then the other, simply hold the steering wheel in that direction and insert your key. If this doesn’t work, you can rock the steering wheel and jiggle the key at the same time. • 2.) Grease the lock. A graphite based or silicon lubricant is best in this case. Simply spray the lubricant into the ignition of your vehicle and wipe away any excess. Insert your car key. A little shake might be necessary if it doesn’t work right away. • 3.) Rapping your car key. If greasing the lock doesn’t work, you may need to try actually shaking the inside of the lock to get it to work properly. To do this, get a small hammer or tool that is comparable. Place your key in the ignition and tap your tool on the key while you try to turn the key. The trick is to get the lock to vibrate back into place so not a lot of force is needed. • 4.) Get a new key. The problem may not be your ignition, but the car key itself. Try a spare key if you have one. If you don’t, carefully examine your current key for any nicks or twists that don’t look quite right. • 5.) Call your local locksmith. Your local locksmith will be happy to come to your rescue. With one quick phone call, they will come to your location and access the situation. Contrary to popular belief, calling your local locksmith doesn’t cost as much as you might think. It is more affordable then a trip to the car dealership and way more convenient. •
