History • 2004 ASAP was formed • 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted • 2005 High School Youth Summit • 2006 Jr. High Youth Summit • 2007 2nd YRBS Conducted • 2008 Awarded to be a part of the National Leadership Institute (NIL) • 2008 Drug Free Communities Grant received • 2009 3rd YRBS Conducted • 2009 Completed NIL

Community Outreach and Education • Kick Off Breakfast • More than 100 in attendance of multiple sectors (Schools, Law Enforcement, Community Leaders, Elected Officials – including media coverage) • Presentations by youth, health care professionals, law enforcement, and federal grant project officer. • Goal was to create awareness and support of grant objectives.

Community Outreach and Education • Town Hall Meetings • All meetings included: • Light refreshments/Child care • Local youth risk behavior statistics • Local resources available to address risk behaviors • Local laws surrounding alcohol use • Call to action and opportunities for committment • Topics included: • Illegal drug recognition and abuse • How to talk to your kids about the tough issues • Parents Who Host/Social Host Laws • Athletes and effect of substance abuse on performance • Prescription drugs and abuse by our youth

  7. Life of an Athlete • Identified concern of athletes use of drugs and alcohol • Had John Underwood present to: • Athletes • Athletic Directors • Coaches • Parents • Concerned Community Members

Life of an Athlete • 5 county leaders attended Underwood training • Putting the plan into action • Meeting of 5 trained leaders and other core decision makers • Presentation to all county Superintendents • Need to determine alcohol assessment process and providers • 1 day county wide coach/athletic directors training • 2 day state training for coalition and school members • Underwood will present to state Athletic Directors Association in November
