  2. Words can help or hurt Objectives • Teach the importance of controlling what we say • Demonstrate the consequences of choosing the wrong words

  3. Materials • Small plastic bucket half filled with water • Paper origami boats (or paper to fold into boats) • Small, light people figures (that will fit on the boat)

  4. Lesson • Show students the water in the bucket. What do you think this water can do? • Bring out the boat with people figure in the boat. How do you think the water can help the people in the boat? • Float the boat and let the water carry the boat. Is this helpful to the people? Why?

  5. Lesson (Cont’d) • Do you think the water can hurt the people? • What do you think the water will do to the boat if there is a storm? • Move the bucket to create big waves to flip the boat. • What happened to the people in the boat? Were they hurt?

  6. Lesson (Cont’d) • Water can help and hurt the people in the boat. It can help the people by moving them from place to place. But it can also sometimes hurt the people. • Another example is fire. Fire can help people cook and keep warm. Fire can also hurt people (burn) if it is not used properly.

  7. Lesson (Cont’d) • Words are the same. If we are not careful with what we say, our words can hurt someone.

  9. Discussion • What are some examples of words that can help people? How can we use words to help or encourage others? • What are some examples of words that can hurt people? • Share your experience of being hurt by people’s words.

  10. Life Application • How can we tell if our words are hurting others? • How can we prevent ourselves from hurting people? What can we do? • How can our relationship with God help us not hurt people with our words?

  11. Testimony • Mary and Bob got along very well and liked to play together. One day, John saw them playing together and thought he would tease them a little bit. John told others that Mary and Bob “liked” each other. Even though John did not mean it . . .

  12. Testimony (Cont’d) • Mary and Bob stopped talking with each other. John’s words really hurt them even though John did not mean it. John even apologized, but Mary and Bob no longer liked playing with each other.
