How to write to your teacher (or boss, or professor) You want to: • convey your message concisely • convey your message correctly • show respect • show intelligence • …..IMPRESS ME!
Each message you send should: • include an appropriate opening greeting. “Dear Ms. Stoltzfus”, for example • include a message with important details given clearly. (see next slide!) • include a complimentary closing. “Thank you” is always a good one “TTFN” is a bit too casual • include your name. especially if your e-mail address doesn’t include your name!
Message Details 1: Asking for help on homework • “I don’t get it” or “How do I do this?” … NOT appropriate messages • Figure out what you do and don’t know about the problem and include this information in your message; then be specific in your question: • “ I understand: __________ and ____________” • “I set up the problem like this: _____________” • “I solved, mathematically by: _______________” • “The answer I got was ____and the computer says it is incorrect” • “Where did I go wrong?”
Message Details 2: Asking for information • Do NOT write to ask for information until you have made absolutely certain that you cannot find this information somewhere else first! • Did you check the syllabus? Edline? Lon-Capa? Your notes? Did you ask someone else in your class? • Always be polite in your request! • Do NOT wait until last minute and then expect an immediate answer…plan ahead!
