Initiating Conversations… • Initial collaborative discussions began during the 2009-10 school year • Informal group met during 2010-11 with Carolyn Wierda at SVSU • Representatives from Bay-Arenac ISD, Midland County ESA, Saginaw ISD, Delta College, SVSU Faculty • Draft Strategic Plan developed

  9. Goals of the Collaborative • To become a high performing collaborative • To mirror local district/building academic goals – leveraging talent and resources – to support achievement of all students in the Great Lakes Bay Region • Reading • Writing • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies

  10. How will the goals be achieved?Who will do the work? • Discussions among 3 ISD Superintendents • Planning during 2010-11 • Board agreements • Unify One Great Lakes Bay Instructional Services Department

  24. Lessons We’re Learning… Coming together is a process It takes a while to develop a shared vision Continuous communication & feedback are required Time to plan and discuss issues must be built into the schedule Trust can strengthen through shared success and experiences together

Challenges in Collaboration Typically cited in the research: Reconciling policies and procedures of different departments Reluctance to/ or constraints about sharing information Insufficient staff support Different IT systems Staff opposition (active or passive) Lack of understanding of partner’s limitations Personal and turf issues Merging professional/program cultures

Planning for 2012-13 Expand the level of service to LEAs Strengthen the team in key areas Establish a Great Lakes Bay Instructional Leadership Council (LEA representation) Initiate collaborations with SVSU faculty Unify Health Education Coordination (SISD/BAISD) Continue to address challenges
