Introduction • Clinical Nurse Preceptor education program • 6 week course • Estimated start date – January 2014 • Targeted Audience: • All nurse interested in serving as clinical preceptors to senior nursing students, externs, and new hires. • This more in-depth education will replace the previous clinical advisor training going forward. • Transitioning into an academic health center • We want to raise the prestige level of our nurse preceptors with our affiliated nursing schools

Course Design • Canvas Online • 6 weekly modules: • Articles, recommended web sites, and key discussions • Supportive material: • Essential Responsibilities of the Preceptor • An assigned project: • Develop a portfolio of training material for their units • A simulation exercise dealing with difficult situations

Purpose of Course • Provide up to date evidence based training • Preceptor skills • Adult learning principles • Critical thinking at the bedside • Assessment and feedback • Conflict resolution • To enable our staff to support and facilitate learning for our student nurses and externs • Educate nurses wanting to become preceptors • Refresher training for experienced preceptors

Course Objectives • After completing this course, the preceptors will be able to: • Explain adult learning theory. • Describe how learning activities are influenced by curriculum objective levels. • Differentiate between teaching and learning. • Identify techniques for coaching to various competency levels. • Utilize case studies, exemplars, and plans of care to coach students. • Assess students based upon desired outcomes.  • Demonstrate the ability to handle the most common situations that occur with students.

  6. Our Overall Goals • Assist staff to act as facilitators of learning • Improve how staff interact with students, externs, and new hires • Encourage staff to become mentors to students as well as colleagues • Build trust and commitment • Evaluate our current assessment process for both preceptors and students
