  3. Many ways in which different populations interact: • Competition • Predation • Symbiotic Relationships COEVOLUTION – An overarching concept

  4. Coevolution • Evolution of one species in response to new adaptations that appear in another species • Examples • Prey defenses cause predators to adapt to them or die, etc. • All forms of symbiosis are examples of coevolution

  5. Camouflage Defense • Cryptic Coloration and Coevolution whipporwill insect lizard toad frog

  6. Mimicry and Coevolution • Warning coloration • Aposematic coloration • Two Types of Mimicry • Batesian • Mullerian

  7. Batesian Mimicry palatable or harmless species mimics a harmful model green parrot snake Hawkmoth larva puffs up to look like poisonous snake hawkmoth larvae

  8. Mullerian mimicry Mullerian mimicry two or more protected species look like each other cuckoo bee yellow jacket - group defense? - predators may evolve innate avoidance
