  6. Dealing with difficult words • Read the sentence the word is in and decide what kind of word it is. • Read the paragraph the word is in and try to work out the meaning from the context. Is the word similar to a Serbian word? e.g. volcano, expedition, rapid...

  7. The Race to the Pole • shocked and sad = devastated (adj.) • angrily and unhappily = bitterly (adv.) • a journey organised for a special purpose = expedition (noun) • difficult and dangerous = desperate (adj.) • a place where things are stored = depot (noun) • in a good mood = cheerful (adj.) • something you want to achieve = ambition (noun) • courage and strength = spirit (noun) • extraordinary = remarkable (adj.) • frozen fingers and toes = frostbite (noun)

  8. Read the sentences carefully and try to work out the meanings of the words in bold. 1. The most abundant element in the universe is hydrogen, which makes up about 3/4 of all matter. 2.   11. 3- Which of these hobbies would you most like to take up? stamp collecting bull-fighting snowrafting gardening 4- If you saw some tasty-looking red and white mushrooms in the woods in the autumn, what would you do? go home and make a big omelette for your family and yourself take one of them to the science teacher at school to find out what they are get a book out of the library and make sure they are safe to eat give one of the mushrooms to your dog to see if he/she eats it

  12. 5- If you had the opportunity to travel around the States for four weeks how would you prefer to go? in a rented car with a group of your friends hitch-hiking and getting buses on your own travelling around by aeroplane with your family going on an organised coach trip with your grandmother 6- What would you do if you discovered a deep cave when out walking on your own? tell your friends about it when you got back home tell the local natural history society about the cave go into the cave as far as possible even though you can’t see very well go back home and get a torch and rope to explore the cave properly
