Shared Infrastructures An extended-WDM/TDM-PON test-bed with capacity for 1000 users spread along 100Km, at bit-rates between 1 and 10Gbit/s has been assembled in UPC facilities and made available for ePhoton/One activities. With this laboratory demonstrator, several technologies with potential application in new PONs are being tested in collaboration with ePhoton partners: • ONU based on RSOA+EAM (FT/Orange, UPC, 3-5Labs) (ECOC’07 submission) • ONU based on EDWA + RSOA (PoliMi, UPC) (ECOC’07 submission) • New in-service monitoring strategies for WDM-PONs (IT, UPC) • Other new techniques like dynamic routing, wavelength conversion, ultra-dense homodyne access and centralized monitoring will be also tested in this scenario.

Criteria for VD-A budget allocation Points for Mobility Actions • 1 point per 3 working days of staff mobility • 1 point per 1 week of post-doc mobility • 1 point per 2 weeks of PhD student mobility This point amount is divided between the sending and hosting institution, typically at 50%. Points for Joint Papers • 3 points: long-paper major-journal publications (JLT, JSAC, JQE, JSAC, JSTQE, Trans. on Comm.,...) and OFC/ECOC post-deadline • 2 points: OFC and ECOC, short-paper major-journal publications (PTL, Electronics Letters,...) • 1 point: other journal publications (in English, refereed) • 0.5 points: other conference publications (international, in English) The points are divided among the authors' institutions, not proportionally to the number of authors per partner. Points for WP Meeting Participation • 0.5 point for taking part in meetings • 0.5 point per workshop contribution Points for Teaching Material Contributions • 2 points for a substantial contribution (material for about 3 teaching credits (15-20 hours of teaching), in English).

Scientific and Technical Impact • Hybrid WDM-TDM PON:for scaling up to large user numbers + long reach • Dynamic capacity allocation by optical scheduling:improving network resource utilisation, flexibility in service provisioning • Fibre-wireless:fixed-wireless convergence, fibre-fed FWA • MMF/POF short-range access (commonality with VD-H):low-CAPEX and OPEX dense access networks, “do-it-yourself” • Low-cost optical line terminals, colourless ONUs:cost reduction, source-free ONU, wavelength agility for reconfiguration flexibility

  28. Durable integration • The steadily increasing volume of mobility actions, joint publications, joint project proposals are signs of progress in integration of scientific cooperation on a European scale • To be further expanded and ensured in Year 2 (and hopefully in FP7 NoE BONE)
