  1. Few suggestions to help children have a happy mealtime experience.

  2. In a child care centre creating pleasurable mealtimes will encourage young children to learn healthy eating habits and build positive attitude toward food.

  3. Make mealtimes more relaxed by engaging in positive conversation. Sit with them and talk about benefits of healthy eating habits, eat the same food as them. This will make them feel more relaxed.

  4. Encourage them to develop self-help skills. Children can assist set the table, serve themselves, spread jam or butter on toast, pour milk or water (with small pitcher)

  5. Mealtimes are social time, so make them sit around the table while eating and encourage them to talk to each other. This way they will learn new words, learn to share and improve their social skills.

  6. To encourage youngsters to try new foods read a book about the new dish you want to add to their meals. When the kids are hungry serve the new dish as a snack. Also allow children to assist in the preparation of meals. Getting kids engaged in food preparation can increase their self-esteem and encourage them to try the meal they helped make.

  7. It is essential to use small spoons and plates with edges to help kids scoop up the food easily. Also try to have serving utensils in different colour then eating utensils. This will help them to understand that they have to use different spoons for serving and eating.
