  3. The story so far ! • Recently inspected by the newly formed Skills Funding Agency, Blackpool and the Fylde College received a grading of; • Outstanding ! • This is the Highest grade in the scale. • Have achieved the Highest grade in each of the last four such inspections.

  4. Introduction • Blackpool and the Fylde College has a good reputation for Health & Safety amongst our peers. • Good health and safety is a product of good teamwork between the members of the College community. • Although it’s a question of teamwork, staff must take the lead, leading by example.

  5. Why H & S ? 4 reasons why Organisations need Health and Safety? • Humanitarian – The right to work in a safe environment • Psychological – A Happy Worker is a Productive Worker • Economical – Accidents Cost • Legal – It’s the Law!

External/Internal Pressures External • Public Perception • External Agencies(HSE, EHO, Fire Service, Police) • Insurance Companies(Higher premiums, Limited cover, Withdrawal of Cover) • Poor Media Coverage • Loss of Reputation • Internal • Lowering of morale • Operational disruption • Knock on effect • Poor atmosphere • Anonymous reporting

  8. Accidents and ill healthDefinitions ACCIDENT: An unplanned, uncontrolled event that may cause injury, damage or other form of loss. NEAR MISS: An unplanned, uncontrolled event that whilst not causing injury to anyone, has the potential to cause injury and/or damage to plant or equipment. OCCUPATIONAL ILLNESS: Health problems associated with work.

Duties • Your Duties to Us • Take care of yourself and others • Co-operate with Employers or others who may have legal responsibilities to enable them to comply with any duties & requirements placed upon them Our Duties to You • Duty of Care • Duty to provide, as far as in reasonably practicable, a safe & healthy working environment • Information, training & supervision • Safe machinery & equipment to use • Safe access & egress (including in an emergency and for the DDA)

  11. But how do I do that? • Comply with College/School of Support Service procedures • Ensure Risk assessments have been carried out for the activities you are involved with, or carry them out after training • Complete necessary documentation when required to

  12. College Fire Warden R E C R U I T M E N T C A M P A I G N • Full Training provided! • Get to fulfil that childhood ambition to wear a Fire Fighter’s Outfit! (At least during the course)

College Fire Procedures FIRE ACTION • Operate the NEAREST FIRE ALARM • REPORT LOCATION of Fire to Member of Staff • LEAVE BUILDING by the NEAREST Indicated Exit • REPORT to ASSEMBLY POINT • Persons with LIMITED MOBILITY Move HORIZONTALLY AWAY FROM FIRE Initially, to marked REFUGE (REST) POINTS (IN STAIRWAYS) before continuing to evacuate the building and after the main body of Evacuees have passed • STAFF • Ensure ROOM IS CLEAR • TURN OFF SERVICES, if possible and safe to do so • Close but don’t lock room door • ACCOUNT for their STUDENTS at the ASSEMBLY POINT • REPORT to Head of School/Department • HOS/SERVICE • REPORT status to Fire Marshal/ Incident Controller/Senior Fire Officer at the scene

  15. FIRST AID OFFICERS If you require a First Aid Officer Please contact Reception on Ext 0, or the Emergency Number, Ext 4004 Information Notices

College First Aider R E C R U I T M E N T C A M P A I G N Blackpool and the Fylde College always has vacancies for COLLEGE FIRST AIDERS Benefits • Initial 3 day course, + 3 yearly, 2 day refresher course - Free to individual • Honorarium for being on College approved list • Covered by College Insurance when administering First Aid on College property

Accident Reporting • Recorded in School /Departmental accident book • Health, Safety & Environmental Support Office (HSESO), MUST be informed by telephone on the same day, AND via a Correctly completed College Report Form, within 2 days if serious, or 3 days if not • If Serious: HSESO informs HSE and LSC • via relevant forms
