  4. Cut Aways • Cut aways can be used to summarise an interview, shortening an answer. • Cut aways can include; wallpaper shots, close up details of the main action, peoples faces/bodies (to capture emotion), shots from the perspective of the main object in the sequence.

  5. Types of documentary There are different types of documentary which inform the specified topic in different ways. Techniques such as dramatic filming or a more analytical approach to the matter. Others have a humorous or a serious take on it’s subject, all in which to keep the audience engaged.

  6. Investigative Documentary The documentary introduces a problem or question and aims to solve or inform on possible solutions to it. An investigative documentary often uses dramatic filming, to heighten tension and to keep the audience interested and informed. Panorama is an example of an investigative documentary.

  7. Ethnological documentary This style of documentary looks at different cultures, races and cultures of groups of people, in either a scientific or analytical manner. The Secret Millionaire often looks at different communities of people in difficult situations.

  8. Documentary Reconstruction These documentaries have a reconstruction which re-enacts the event or situation, usually with interviews supporting the narrative. This style is useful for the audience, as they engage more in visualising the event being re-enacted and often connect more with those involved. Both United 93 and Touching the Void are examples of a documentary reconstruction, re-enacting different events. Touching the Void focuses on two mountaineers life-threatening experience in the Peruvian Mountains, whilst United 93 relives the story of those onboard Flight 93 on the day of 9/11.

  9. Drama-Documentary A drama-documentary dramatises an event (or a series of events) and uses the techniques of the fiction film to construct the ‘real’. Voiceover in the form of an intra-fictional character or a ‘voice of god narration’ can be used to explain the narrative. Goodfellas is a drama-documentary, charting the life of Henry Hill, who acts as an intra-fictional character, both narrating and being par of the dramatisation as a character also.

  10. Mockumentary Normally in the form of a TV programme or a film, a mockumentary uses a documentary form and techniques so as to appear in that form. It approaches subjects in a light-hearted, amusing way, so as to keep the audience entertained as well as occasionally informing. This Is Spinal Tap is a popular example of a mockumentary, following a rock band in a documentary style.
