  2. Synopsis Beloved By: Toni Morrison • Sethe, the main character, tells of her escape of slavery but spends her entire life unable to escape her past. Through Beloved, who seems to be reincarnated from Sethe’s daughter that she had killed previously, Sethe is able to tell break her silence and deal with her past. The Color Purple By: Alice Walker • Ceile, the main character, writes letters to God about her life, how she has been mistreated, and how she gains back her dignity and strength through Shug and letters she finds from her sister, Nettie. Through Celie’s letters, she is able to gain her voice which has been silenced for years.

Theme of Beloved Beloved shows many examples of overcoming the past in order to live in the present • From the very beginning , the book shows the importance of memory and history. • Sethe constantly battles with the memory of her life as a slave and also through her aggressive ghost daughter • When Paul D sees Sethe’s “tree-like” scar, he is engrossed and compares it to how white men use trees as a site for brutality • The arrival of Beloved is the ultimate example of being unable to escape Sethe’s past.

Examples of the theme (cont.) • Both Sethe and Paul D both realize that addressing their memories will be painful but will help them move forward • Sethe had originally stayed in 124 to await her husband but then rethinks beginning a new family with Paul D. This shows that she is taking the steps to reclaim who she is and heal her spirit • Paul D’s sexual encounter with Beloved is thought to have opened his “tobacco tin” heart and his chants “red heart, red heart” symbolizes his past returning and an overflow of passion • Although Sethe blames murdering Beloved to the prevention of slavery, she mostly blames herself

Examples of the theme (cont.) • In part 3 of the book, Denver symbolizes the future while Beloved symbolizes the past • Sethe’s mistake of Mr. Bodwin as the schoolteacher proves how engulfed in the past she is • The black community stop Sethe and it shows the community evolving from the beginning of the story when they didn’t warn Sether of the arrival of the schoolteacher.

Theme of The Color Purple • The Color Purple shows the theme of voice and being able to find ones through narration • Celie writes letters to God which allows her to be honest and express her voice which is repressed in reality • Celie’s first child is taken from her after birth • She has endured rape and abuse from her father • In the beginning of the book, she blamed God instead of her father for the death of her child • She is very passive, especially toward men and she is the object of others

Examples of the Theme(cont.) • When Celie advises Harpo to beat Sophia, it is due to her own abuse. • Celie sees that Sophia knows how to retaliate to physical abuse and observes her assertiveness. • Sophia doesn’t quiet when Mr ______ or Harpo enters the room • Celie begins to find her “voice” when Kate buys her a new dress and tells her she deserves more • She admits to God that she rather become wooden rather than to react emotionally or intellectually to adversity

Examples in the book (cont.) • In letter 22, Shug arrives sick and the first thing she says to Celie is “Girl, you sure is ugly” which makes Celie realize that how she perceives herself is different from how others see her. • This is the beginning her self-awareness which is the foundation of her empowerment

Examples in the book (cont.) • As the book continues, Celie spits in Mr ____’s father’s water for speaking badly of Shug. • She threatens to put Shug’s pee in it next time he returns • Harpo asks for advise again and this time, Celie tells him how she feels: that abuse is not the answer. • In letter 47, Celie is no longer “wooden” but cries as she tells her story to Shug

Examples in the book (cont.) • Shug helps Celie become a more sexual and vibrant person while Celie helps Shug soften and care more and she sees Celie as her own suffering • Only when Shug helps Celie find and decipher Netties’ letters, does Celie find her self-reliance and becomes unafraid of Mr. _____. • In letter 74, Celie has gotten her voice and calls Mr. ____ a “low-down” dog and tells him she's leaving and that his children are brats.

  11. Examples in the book (cont.) • In letter 75, Celie tells Mr. _____: “I curse you….until you do right by me, everything you touch will crumble” • In the end of the novel, Celie is able to anaylize her feelings as well as describes other’s feelings and motives

Comparative Analysis • Both novels deal with slavery • Sethe deals with actual slavery and overcoming her past while Celie deals with slavery from her father and again from Mr. ______. • Sethe and Celie both have to overcome their pasts in some way • Sethe deals with killing her daughter • Celie finds herself and her voice

  13. Background History Beloved The Color Purple • Toni Morrison didn’t encounter racism until her teens • She stated “When I was in first grade, no one thought I was inferior. I was the only black in the class and the only child who could read.” • Alice Walker took part in the Civil Rights Movement which contributed to her writing of the book • Also, she dealt with the racist divided south throughout school. However, she remained valedictorian in high school.
