Exploring the Fascinating World of Germs: A Holiday Science Show with Prof. Howard Stone

1. PCCM hosts family Holiday Show with Prof. Howard Stone (DMR 0819860)Education Outreach: D. Steinberg and H. Stone December 19, 2009, PCCM held the first annual Holiday Science Lecture with Prof. Howard Stone at Princeton University. Prof. Stone brought the Harvard tradition with him when he joined Princeton University, fostering a collaboration between the two universities’ MRSECs. The 2009 Holiday Show led families on an exploration of the science behind germs. On the snowy Saturday, more than 200 people, young and old, came to McCosh lecture hall to learn how scientists first discovered the world of germs and bacteria and solved the mystery of cholera, and how scientists continue to create new methods to fight the spread of infection by harmful germs. Through live experiments and interactive demonstrations, children were invited to investigate how bacteria move, communicate and multiply. Special guest Prof. Bonnie Bassler showcased glow-in-the-dark bacteria “painted” onto Petri dishes in winter scenes. Every kid took home their own harmless glow-in-the-dark bacteria kits. With corporate funding, PCCM was able to give science-themed t-shirts to every child as well. Children and their families braved the snowy conditions to learn about germs. Every child brought home a photoluminescent bacteria kit.
